Bad Heel Pain, back related?

I have DDD and have had 2 discectomies on L5=S1. As a result, they are telling me I probably have permanent nerve damage. I have pain in my right buttock and down my right leg. THis week a new symptom cropped up. My right heel hurts very badly. I happened very quickly. I cannot even apply pressure on it while I walk on my tile floor. It also feels a little swollen to me.

Any ideas if this is related to my back problems? Is there anything I can do to aleviate the pain? I purchased 2 pairs of comfy sneakers last night so at least I can have some cushioning when i was outside. It helps some.

Heel pain is tricky to diagnose...especially with ongoing back problems, like you have. It's possible that it's connected to your back issues...but then again, it could also be a case of plantar fasciitis, too. Do you have flat feet? Do you pronate more than usual? Is the heel pain more prevalent first thing in the morning, right when you get out of bed? If the answer to any of these are "yes", it's probably PF. Have you seen a podiatrist? If the heel pain is not something nerve-related with your back, you should definitely do some calf stretches and ice it. Take a bottled water and throw it in the freezer, then roll your foot (applying slight pressure) on the frozen bottle of water for 10 minutes. Not only do you get the benefit of ice to bring down the inflammation, but the rolling effect massages the tissue, similar to trigger point therapy. Do an internet search on plantar fasciitis, and you'll get loaRAB of information, ranging from symptoms to stretching and treatment options. I have PF and a heel spur as a result of it...so believe me, I understand and can totally relate to the pain you're feeling. It sucks when both your back AND feet hurt.
 
Yes it can be related. I just had 360 fusion to stop the horrible pain in my feet. It has gotten a bit better but has not gone away. Dr. says nerves need time to heal. I'm depressed because I hear so many others say their pain is gone after surgery. Mine is still there but can tell some improvement. But the L5/S1 area can affect your feet. Best wishes.
 
The heel of my left foot always felt like I had a BAD stone bruise when I walked. I told my neurologist about it and he said I was the first patient to complain of that and told me I should have it checked by a foot specialist. Well low and behold, after my back surgery, it was gone.

So my answer is yes, it can be related to your back issues. Mine was!
