Bad Gas Mileage Out Of 4 Cylinder Toyota Truck?

It's a truck. If it's 2wd I would expect around 20mpg maybe if you're luck up to 25. But if it's 4wd, you're prob only getting 15mpg. That's just the characteristics of a truck. More weight, you sit high which for fuel mileage you want it as close to the ground as possible, bigger tire means more rotating mass, more mass, more power to turn those tires. To get better fuel mileage shift it around 2500 rpm assuming it's a manual tranny, keep it tuned up, run your tires at max PSI and don't put over sized tires on it.

Why would I be getting bad gas mileage out if this truck?
Its a 1989 toyota pick up with 300k on the motor.
It runs fine but the gas mileage sucks and that's the whole reason I got the truck!
Can anyone give me an opinion on what they think the problem may be?
