Backup utilities - Looking for opinions

I recently (within the last few months) upgraded from a Tungsten e to the T/x and am looking for a good backup utility. What is the most effective utility available for the t/x?

I use BackupBuddyVFS, I have it configured to automatically backup my T|X at 4am every morning and the backup is done to the SD card....Rich

PS. There is also a desktop portion that allows your to backup your SD card to your hard drive and will allow you to do selective restores/or full restore if or when necessary.............Rich:)

I also use and really like RescoBackup. Haven't had any problems with it, and I've had my T|X reset and delete ALL data twice.

Second time, RescoBackup restored my T|X and didn't miss a beat! (I wasn't using it the first time, and had to restore from desktop. What a pain! I learned my lesson, and purchased RescoBackup)

One correction, RescoLock is free, wether you purchase RescoBackup, or not. (You should download it. Great program)

Looking through the forums on Resco's Website I am seeing nothing but horror stories from people who have used it! While it sounds like a product that will do what I need, I am a little hesitant to download a product whose own site forums are giving it that much bad press..... Any thoughts?

I haven't browsed their boards, so I wasn't aware of horror stories, or I certainly wouldn't recommend them!

All I can tell you is, I've been using it since about a week after I purchased my T|X (when it crashed, and I lost ALL of my data and had to restore from my desktop)

The only issue I had was that at the end of a full backup, my T|X would reset. However, I KNEW this was a problem created by TextPlus, which I simply refused to remove from my Palm T|X cause I use it all of the time.

This soft reset (no data loss) occured only after a full backup, it didn't happen after an update to an existing backup. Also, even though my Palm would reset, I restored from the backups several times, and they always worked fine (you can also check and confirm that your backup is good)

Once I downloaded and installed RescoLocker, and used it to lock TextPlus, I no longer have ANY issues with resets after a backup.

My backups work flawlessly. I haven't used the scheduled backup, but you can configure your Palm to backup at a preset time (say, first thing in the morning) every day, you can create backup "sets" for when you know you're going to install possibly buggy software, you can update an existing backup (much faster then full backup), etc. etc.

I'd suggest you try RescoBackup and see if it works for you. I"ve also read of people having problems with backupbuddy, so who knows?

Lucky thing is, they all let you try before you buy!

I've used BackupBuddyVFS, RescoBackup, Flybackup, Cardbackup, and BackupMan on my TX. I have a number of apps on my TX that require entering a pretty long registration code. The only backup program that successfully restores the app into the registered state is BackupMan.

That's actually a good thing Josh, and should be done after any "full restore" regardless of the program you're using. My only input here is that TEST these programs with a deliberate hard reset (you might as well really "know") - but I don't have a TX. I have a T3. I use jkware CardBackup (which has been reported to have TX inconsistencies, and there hasn't been an update in ages), and TealBackup (which apparently IS TX compliant, and a new beta is about to be released drastically improving stability where "locking" is required, a la the Resco "lock" application).

My only experience here with Resco is their viewer, which I tried and it was nowhere near as good as AcidImage, so I'm not about to use their backup proggie. However, If Mooseman likes it that would be a "bunch of points" in my book for Resco.

The only thing that I can tell a TX user, not being one (yet) myself, is that the only OTHER programs that appear to be TX friendly are BackupMan (recommended above by docinthebox), TealBackup and Resco. So at least your choices aren't as plentiful and finding the right one for YOU will be easier. God Bless trials - make sure you're hotsynched before testing, and give 'em a whirl - it's the only real way of finding what works.

With respect to the long registration code mentioned by docinthebox, that's something in "Saved Preferences" not being restored properly (except apparently for BackupMan!) - and that would bother me! A lot! I'd use whichever restored Saved Prefs properly and as an added step, COPY your saved prefs with a utility to a folder on the card just for safekeeping.

Thanks to everyone for all of the info. I always like to get some public opinion of products before I install them on the one piece of equipment which contains my entire life.

I will second BackupMan. I couldn't get BackupBuddy to work for me. I have used BackupMan to restore individual applications as well as after a hard reset.

Most dedicated forums will have only negative posts about a product. People who have no problems don't typically go there.

I've been using Resco backup for a couple of years - no issues - and I've never posted in their forums nor even wandered over there.

I wouldn't let a few negative posts bother me.....you do have a TX and there have been enough negative posts about it that it apparently didn't deter you? ;)

Good points. Negative posts didn't stop me from buying an ipod nano either. Sounds like I need to do some testing. Thanks for the input Moose Man. Sometimes you just need someone to put things in perspective. :)
