Backup Folder

My wife's Tungsten T recently died overnight though the battery shouldn't have been dead. She had hotsynched the night before. A hard reset was necessary after recharging. There was a conflict with the hotsych and as a rookie I called palm and was told for $25 to pull the backup folder from the palm user folder and redo the hotsynch. It worked fine, but she is missing a lot of recent phone numbers, notes etc. Does anyone know which backup files would likely contain this data?Or is it gone? I wonder if the last hotsych before the crash wasn't succesful.Thanks.

You could post her last couple of hot sync logs but it sounds as if the h.s. was not successful and here's why:

The PIM data is held in subfolders of the user and not in the backup folder. Each PIM database has a subfolder; address, calendar, todo, memo and each current file ends with .dat with archive or deleted items contained in a .dba (datebook archive) and similar "a" files for the other pims.

The hot sync is suppose to restore the handheld by pulling data from the DAT file. The Tungsten T's Palm Desktop was updated via a patch but if you didn't download the patch then something might have gone wrong.

I'd suspect though that somehow the hot sync got set to "Do Nothing" at some point in time so post the log and I'll be able to tell you.

Regardless, the PIM information is probably lost - unless you also backup your PC on a regular basis and you included the Palm Desktop subfolders in the backup.

It's too late - also this should not be necessary since OS 5 devices and upgrades to the Palm Desktop.

Hot Sync will detect that a device is "empty" and should restore completely. If it doesn't restore then one of two things happen:

1. The desktop is void of data.
2. The data from the desktop wasn't current - which is what I suspect happend in this case although until the hot sync log is posted.

Nearly all programs are stored in the separate backup directory and are restored after a hard reset as well. The programs that won't restore are those that have their own conduits or storage folders, ie Avantgo, vindigo, Documents to Go and other's.

I believe Moose Man is correct as the device wasn't acting properly and the last hot synch was defecient as I looked at the log. I erroneously thought the info was in the backup folder. Now if someone could solve my dilemma regarding the port being occupied during bluetooth hot synch referred to in a later thread. Thanks again.
