Iwant to backpack across new Zealand on my own time not with a tour group or anything like that. I want to start at the bottom of the south island and work my way up to Auckland. I want to hit most of the best places to see and some cool towns. Any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!
a smaller welcoming town is what i mean by a cool town, Thanks!

You are going to have to start and finish at an airport presumably. It would help if you said how long you have to travel, how you intend to travel, and what you are interested in.

We are doing the same thing in March for 4 weeks, but starting in Auckland. Are you doing any of the hikes?

Here's a lost of the excursions we're hoping to do (but won't get to all of them).

glow worm caving
glacier hiking
thermal hot tub
bungee jumping
kayaking
jet boat
horseback riding
zorbing
zipline
volcano
trout fishing
whale watching
mountain biking
train
golf
hiking
wine tour
rafting
sand toboggan
sailing
aquarium & museum in AKL
SPA!

One great day hike is Tongariro. We're also doing Heaphy and Queen Charlotte. You must have permits and these may be unavailable if you don't plan ahead.

We're also looking for small, quaint towns. Looking for a place we can hear local bands, too.

Have fun!

Depends what you mean by a cool town.

Busy with lots of people that wouldn't give you the time of day, or a smaller more welcoming town that would invite into their home.

Your choice, no matter where you go in New Zealand there is always an adventure to be had.

Be sure to always drop into the local pub. The longer you stay the more people you meet. Lol
