backpacking in Bangkok?

The other day I read how Bangkok is the #2 tourist destination in the world. I've never had any interest in going there, but after reading a bunch of stuff about it it seems like a really interesting place. How much do you think would be a "decent" budget for a trip to Bangkok? Anyone here's been there before? Would $2500 suffice? (excluding airfare)

number 2? From what I've read, all the tourism magazines (Conde Nast etc...) are still rating Bangkok as #1.

Mister Rob, knowing how long your going to stay would help. $2,500 for a week, two weeks, even a month is just fine. In fact I wouldn't even consider you a backpacker with that much.
