Backpacking for the inexperienced?

I've never gone backpacking before, but I'm interested in doing so this summer, hopefully for a longish period of time (1-2 month). Is this feasible? Do I need to have "experience" to backpack for a trip this long? I don't currently have any idea who I'd go with, but should I look for someone who has done this type of thing before, or could I manage with an inexperienced friend? I plan on packing food and having food packages dropped off at certain points we pass by on the trip. Also, I would prepare physically before going - as in lots of running.
I know someone who backpacked for a year as well, so I feel I could get a lot of information on what to bring/what to do from them.

Backpackers: What is your opinion - would it be a mistake to attempt something like this without much experience? I've gone camping probably a hundred times, but is that sufficient? What are some important things/skills I need to learn before going?

Since you've done quite a bit of camping, you should be fine.

Just research and familiarize yourself with the area (ie. climate changes, landmarks, rivers, etc.) you will be trekking. Be sure to take a map and compass with you, and if you can, maybe a handheld GPS device.

Make sure to keep yourself hydrated. Also, be sure to bring extra pairs of socks with you. Proper foot care is essential.

you absolutely whould be going with others who have experience and not alone with so little exp.

Read up on some survival books like those by Tom Brown (look in amazon).

I can't talk here, but email me at [email protected] if you want to talk about backpacking.

She doesn't need survival books, that's stupid, just some basic advice about the wilderness she can get from any hiking/backpacking book.

Everyone has a first time. Camping is good experience, at least she'll be used to living outdoors and dealing with the weather, dirt, cooking, etc.
