Is it possible to disable or even turn down the backlight below the minimum slider bar setting?

Since you don't specify which device - lets assume a T5 or TX or LD and then no, there is not another way.

The method of brightness is tied to the type of screen: Backlight devices could have the backlight turned off completely such as on a M series but most of the TransReflective screens of the later devices require the backlight to be at least a minimum level.

I've seen programs that claim to allow you to go beyond the lower brightness limit on the Palm. The link below offers a brightness fix for PXA Palms (whatever that is) and one specifically for the TX. I can't personally vouch for them.

brightnessFix.tx.prc is exactly the solution I was looking for. After it is run once, it make the built in brightness slider more sensitive ... from zero to 100%. Night time use should now be greatly enhanced as should battery life.
