It is easy had you read your manual.
Easy:
Set your point and shoot to portrait mode. If you have no portrait mode, then just leave it on auto.
Have your subject stand or be as far as he or she could be from the background. Put him or her at the center of the image and HALF-PRESS the shutter-button (the one you click to take a picture)
Refer to your manual to see what indicators are present when the image is properly focused.
Without letting go of the half-pressed shutter button, move around your camera and place your subject wherever you want within the photo. AGAIN, DO NOT LET GO OF THE HALF-PRESSED BUTTON!!!!
Fully pressed it when happy.
Note: Remember to focus with the subject at the center. The camera's autofocus works well if the subject is at the center.
Advance:
Set your camera to Aperture mode (refer to manual). Turn the aperture to the lowest number (refer to the manual).
Half-pressed again with the subject at the center. Recompose and shoot!
Reading the manual goes a long way.
