Backfiring problem on a yamaha fj1200?

My dad has a backfiring problem on a yamaha fj1200 he is restoring.
He thinks it could be an exhaust valve although he is not sure, could it have anything to do with the carburetor?

first do a compression test, that will tell if a valve is not closing
or burnt. If it is more of a popping type on acceleration it could
be a lean carb problem. try pulling choke out a little if problem
goes away the carb is lean. if exhaust is changed to an open
system(no muffler) this could cause a lean condition.
