Back to the Future: Surely the MOST under-rated classic of all time?

I'm not sure if "underrated" is the right word to use since it implies that the films are generally hated, which is clearly poppycock. However it does seem as though it is often overshadowed by other popular franchises such as The Godfather or Star Wars, which is a shame IMO because it's the best of the lot.

The BTTF films most definitely were under rated without a doubt but in recent years it has burned itself into the public consciousness , no doubt assisted by the regular tv screenings.

To claim it was as highly regarded as the other trilogies mentioned is clearly bollocks.

The BTTF films were just another movie series for many years.

It's appreciated now but it wasn't always that way like it was for Indiana Jones and the very average Star Wars films.
Even the director didn't like those so he's spent more than a decade pissing about with them over and over again.

The first Star Wars movies was a milestone for special effects in the cinema but the story is hardly ground breaking.

Their entertainment value is way less than BTTF

For me, the BTTF series was one of THE big three during the 80s, alongside the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

Is it underrated? Possibly, although only in relation to the other two franchises. In itself I'd say it's widely regarded as a great series of films. It just didn't, and still doesnt, have the same cultural impact as Star Wars or Indy.

Personally, I don't see any one of those three as being inherantly better, or worse than the other two. They're all such a great series of movies (with the odd flaw).

I find the BTTF films riveting from start to finish.
Although the SW films are good there are several moments when you look at your watch during a lull.
Perhaps its more accurate to say the SW films are OVER rated.
I've been a sci fi fan all my life but even as a 16 year old seeing the first film at the cinema I couldn't and still cannot see why these films have such a following.
Sure , the effects blew you away compared to anything of the time and they still look good today but as Star Trek fans will agree , the effects don't really matter compared to the stories.
And I find the SW stories weak , corny and predictable.

I think the fact that nobody has ever tried to copy the BTTF films unlike the other 2 trilogies we mention shows how unique they are

I think the fact there has been such a big deal made out of the 25th anniversary proves the films are truly being appreciatated. Re-releases, blu rays, reunions and tributes. BTTF has been everywhere this past month, even the One show had a cheesy tribute. How many 80's films can rival it's continued popularity?

I heard it referred to as our generations 'It's a Wonderful Life' and I think it will stand up for years to come. The film about time travel that is timeless.

I agree, considering there have been no sequels, prequels or TV shows, it a testament to its status that it's managed to remain in the public consciousness after all these years without any further exposure.

I know but the cartoon was just after the movies and the ride is only available if you travel to Universal Studios. Unlike the other two big trilogies of the time, Star Wars & Indiana Jones, there has been no recent "global" exposure.

I've just bought the 25th Anniversary edition and have watched them all for the first time in ages. The first Back To the Future film is a classic no doubt about that, it's brilliant. Part two is mediocre in 2015 but fantastic in the 'new' 1985/1955. Part three is an enjoyable film but I think it lacks the ideas and originality of the first two.
