Back to the Future: Surely the MOST under-rated classic of all time?

...compared to the more celebrated and 'showy' Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Carribean franchises?

Still stanRAB up today as a wonderful piece of cinematic storytelling!!

It could still be released at the cinema today and garner a new generation of fans!

Big up to The Future!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the OP.
When I first got it on video in the mid 80's I thought it was ok .
When I saw the other parts years later I enjoyed the mixing of part 1 into part 2.
But I never considered them movie classics.

It must have been a decade before I saw them again on dvd and they stood up excellently as marvellously enjoyable adventures that are better now than they were when they came out .

I think it has taken 2 decades for people to reacquaint themselves with the films and realise how good they are.

For me they may well be the most enjoyable trilogy of all time .
Even better than Indiana Jones and certainly better than the over rated Star Wars

Totally agree! It was just such a unique and interesting idea! Nothing IMHO has surpassed it in terms of creativity and imagination...the merging of the 50's/80's time frames, fashion, music....WOW! Just superb!!!!!!!!!

I first saw BTTF from a copied rental version borrowed from a neighbour around 86/87 as a young kid. It was so good and thought it was the bees knees. felt exilarated after seeing it!!!

didnt believe in a million years there would be a sequal. Even though the version I saw had To Be Continued at the end, which wasnt on the original release I believe.

enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd ones very much - but they just dont compare to the first.

but have to agree with comments here - I dont think its under rated. And always gets in the countdowns I sometimes see.

Underrated, maybe, compared to Star Wars, there is no comparison, Star Wars is way ahead imo (it is possibly the greatest movie ever made, I'm talking about Episode IV, not the sixtuplitology).

I do however love BTTF. I must admit to 'not getting it' when it first came out and even being not too sure about Michael J Fox but since then I've seen all 3 umpteen times and realised that it's probably the only series of movies where every episode has equal merits.
Michael J Fox IS Marty McFly, Christopher Lloyd IS Emmett Brown.

If somebody asked me which was my favorite my answer would be "I don't know" so as a trilogy I would have to say it is the best.

I must say the original poster has a point. I think it is an underated classic. If I went up to people I know and ask what would you consider a classic franchise they would probably say Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Alien, Lord of the Rings and The Godfather I think none would say Back to the Future even though pretty much everyone I know love them.

I cant even remember the first time i saw it, its just one of those films that i have grown up with and always seemed to be on. I love them, one and two more then three. But still a fab trillogy.

I'm in the minority I think. I've always felt it was always somewhat overrated, I never really saw the appeal but it certainly had an impact on the 80's generation, much like Star Wars had on the 70's.

I saw it when it was released using a free ticket out of a newspaper, and every member of the audience got a free can of Quattro. It may have been the most 80's day of my life.
