Hey Emily...how are you doing???
I guess I have accepted the need for the new surgery, and that I will have to have it in order to hopefully get out of pain. I am not happy about it, but I accept it. My Dr. is the same Dr. who did the original surgery 1 1/2 yrs. ago...BUT they now have a new procedure which for the "normal" person will be soooooo much easier...unfortunately, because I have all of the hardware stuff (rod/cage/screws etc) in me already...we have to open me up and take it all out...that is the part I am not looking for....then closing me up, and then doing the new procedure...hummmmmm....husband wants to know if they will give me a trade in on all of the used hardware!!!! Can you imagine...think I'll ask my Dr....!!!!! Or at the very least a rebate for the 2nd surgery... Gotta laugh.... I'll let yall know when I am scheduled....thanks for thinking of me!!

I went to my Ortho. today...and yup...my SI joint surgery was a failure...no wonder I have so much pain... I am not at all happy about this...this is a barbaric surgery....BUT...the good part is that a new SI joint surgery has been developed!!!!!! Much less invasive...and better stabilisation...horray...the only problem is that I have to basically have a double surgery...one to take out all of the hardware that was put in during the 1st surgery....and then following that...well, they will put in the new hardware/stuff.... Only gonna be in the hospital for a couple of days vs 6 the last time!! BUT the recovery time will be the same...3 to 6 months...
Just thought I'd share the "happy" news. I am happy, really, just hate the thought of doing this again....no getting away from it...it is painful...but, hopefully in the end...I will be better....

Hi Sage, sorry you have to go through another surgery. I hope this does the trick. Can you please tell me more about the new version of this SI joint surgery? My boyfriend pain is coming from his right SI joint. He has had 4 back surgeries and a hip replacement and still suffers in extreme pain everyday. His pm doctor had did some shots in the SI joint and that helped but just for a short time. I'm afraid of him having more surgery but I would like to know more about this procedure if you are able to give me the details. Thanks so much.

Lynne

Sage I am so sorry that you are having to go through another surgery. You have been through so much. Do you know your surgery date yet? I just want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you now, during your surgery and during your recovery.

Sage just wanted you to know that I will be praying for you and your recovery. SounRAB to me like you have an awful lot on your schedule before the surgery. Now don't overdo. I am having another cervical spine fusion on Jan.4th and even though I have already had 3 of these done I am still worried although I know I will be okay. My neurosurgeon told me Monday that I just have BAD bones and my lurabar spine is not doing very well either but still not bad enough for more surgery. I asked him about my L5/S1 fusion results on the myelogram and he said I was NOT fused yet. Strange thing was the report from the radiologist stated I was but my surgeon says he never goes by the report but looks at the film himself.

You take care and don't do too much.

Gentle Hugs

Dear Sage, I am sending positive thoughts and prayers your way! I am hoping this 2nd surgery will give you the relief you need. Even though I am not a surgical candidate, I am a SI joint pain sufferer-so I know this area can be a bad one. I am waiting for injections this Thur. in my SI joints-have done them multiple times. I will be thinking of you, wishing you the best! Take care, Kera4

Thanks Kyma....I will need lots and lots of prayers....I don't know the time or date yet...we have new ins. beginning Jan...so if the old ins. will pay for the surgery...it will be in Dec., if the new ins. pays...it will be in Jan. I had written in the pain mgmt. section previously regarding my problems with this SI joint.....so there is a lot there to explain it all... My Dr. said I will be under for at least 4 hrs....to complete both surgeries...(removal of all of my hardware from original surgery/and then the new pins will be placed during the second part of the surgery) Basically 2 surgeries...but only one anesthesia...which is a good thing. I will keep you up to date on all of the information...thank you for thinking of me...

Lynn....sorry that your friend is having such pain...I also have right sided pain...no fun...the new procedure is at SI Bone...go there and look around...it kind of explains the product...(product????..yup)...BUT you have to go to a trained specialist...they will give you the names of the ones trained... This surgery is no where as frightening as the old one..the recovery is the same,,,,,but soooo much less destruction. Good luck...

Sage..

Kera, you made me laugh!!! Blue Book value on the used parts...!!!! hahahaha...hey they are made well...but custom fit...don't think there is any real value!! Sorry about the continued need for the SI injections. Wonder if the new procedure would be of any benefit to you???? Thanks for your thought and prayers...I will take all I can get at this point. Have a good day...

Leslie

Kyma....awwww geez...sorry that you have bad bones....lovely term....read what I wrote to Lynne...investigate....the SI joint injections to test the joint to see if it is disrupted....they give you the injection...and if it helps for even just a little while that is an indication of a problem....after the injection they usually do a ct scan or xray to see if the fluid is billowing out of the joint...sign of disruption....that is the way SI joint is diagnosed. I also have had a C5/6 fusion...NO Problem with that one..healed/fused right up....do not understand how one can fuse and another doesn't....I even went on my own and had a bone density test...to make sure my bones were ok.....and they are...I took tons of calcium...and still my SI joint didn't fuse....don't know why....maybe just the luck of the draw...darn. I can't believe that I am wrapping xmas presents and it isn't even Thanksgiving....I just want to get all done so I don't have to worry...cause I am not going to be able to do anything after surgery. I still have closets to clean...food to cook....gifts and carRAB to do...I will get it done, I will get it done. I know that I will have a lot of sleep in my recovery...so I might as well and try to be organized now... My husband just had his second disectomy in 5 weeks 2 days ago...he blew the L4/5 disc again...and the L5/S1 had to be retrimmed also...wow...hope this is the end of that for him...Poor guy, he is in so much pain still...they even kept him in the hospital an extra day....but he is taking his meRAB., and staying down...so hopefully this will be a good recovery for him...in the meantime, I am trying to care and run for him...
Hey, have a good night....sending a little hug and a big prayer to you....rest well..

Leslie

I have a date for my "next" and new surgery on my SI joints...12/10 for right now....I have so much to do...gee...get husband through his disc surgery...finish the guest bathroom....clean out a couple of closets....and wonder how I am going to do this with a hurty back.... will power is good...

Well Sage I will definitely send many prayers your way. It does sound like a very complicated surgery but I know you will do well. I understand about the insurance also so I will wait to hear from you when your surgery is scheduled.

My thought processs right now is "to keep moving"... If I stop, then I think, and I do NOT want to think. So I will do everything in my power to keep moving....I don't care how much it hurts....just have to keep moving.... otherwise I will be worried and soooooo afraid....and that is not a good thing in someone who is a Grandma....nope....SHOW NO FEAR....at least until I hit the hospital and can ask for some happy juice in my iv!! That is my plan....

See now I have thought...and I am concerned about the xray I had to have on my back/pelvis the other day...I sent it off to the surgeon yesterday...now I am wondering why he wanted another xray.... I had the last one in June...hey, wait, maybe good things...maybe I've fused??????????? Would that not be the best gift ever to get that call!!! See, I do think positive...!!!!

Leslie

Gosh Sage you wore me out just reading what all you have to do and with your husband down also!!!!:dizzy: I will read up about the procedure for the SI joint because I have had a lot of groin pain and I am beginning to think that maybe it is caused by the SI joint so thanks for the information. You take care of yourself.;)
Linda:angel:

Ugh, another surgery! But if it gets you to a better place, it will be well worth it! You sound like you've accepted it and are mentally ready for it. That's a big part of the battle right there! You'll handle it well! Let us know when you get more details.

I'm glad you've finally gotten a reason for your continued pain and a good doctor is ready to help you. Yay!!!

 Emily

I have had several series of shots in my SI joints and an epidural. It is very painful to get and does not seem to provide much relief. I just had one yesterday and my back is bruised (probably from tensing up). I also have RA which is in all my joints and arthritis in my back as well and hips. Has anyone have RA as well as back problems and have you been through surgeries? I have minimal movement in my lower back as far as bending and such. I am just wondering if I will need surgery in the future and was wondering about some of the reactions people have went through and if it helped or not?
