Back pains

This is just a rant, not seeking advice or sympathy.

MY FUCKING BACK IS KILLING ME! I can't sleep at all. I toss and turn all night. I arrange pillows in all kind of ways to alleviate it and nothing. I take max doses of Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory meds with NO help. Baths don't help, heating pads... nothing. The pain starts at the small of my back and radiates down my hips and legs. I'm fairly certain it's a pinched nerve and I'm waiting to call the doc. They're at lunch.

The only time it doesn't hurt is when I stand. I can sit sometimes (like now) but usually with pain when I stand. If I wasn't a fast typist I probably couldn't sit here long enough to even type this out.

My dad had this when he was around 42 and ended up with surgery. That scares the shit out of me. Anyway, I stand a good chance of ending up in the hospital or on some kind of medication that I'm sure will knock me out. I'm supposed to call at the end of this week to the temp agency to see if they have a job waiting on me too. I need the money very BADLY! My daughter's birthday is coming up in a few weeks and my other daughter's birthday is three weeks after that. I just don't have time for this shit!!!!! I'm so damned pissed right now my head is spinning!

/rant off (I'd normally say I feel better now but typing things out usually only helps my mental/emotional pain. )

I'd have to say the fact that your so stressed out could be part of the back problem. Good luck on the job thing and happy birthday to your daughter(s) :) It could be worse you could be like me and have twins that have their birthday on New Years day....YIKES...talk about being broke, between Christmas and Birthdays the only time I eat those few months before and after are whatever leftovers family members give me and a lot of peanut butter samiches (yes for those of you grammar nazis I'm aware I spelled SAMICHES). I hope you find some kind of relief from the doctors, what sucks is that they are usually prone to trying to get you all hopped up on pain killers which is ok for a little while but when you're a parent it's tough to deal with the kids that way.......Good luck girlfriend hope things work out!! :)

Well, lucky for me my youngest two are with their grandmother for another week and a half, so Flexiril (sp?) AWAY!

Yeah, he's treating it for muscular strain first. If the muscle relaxer and the physical therapy doesn't help, I'm to go back in the next week or two.

Did I mention I'm trying to prepare for a yard sale this Saturday, well, I am. I also think that is what might have caused this pain as well, all the rearranging, moving and lifting. Anyway, it's going to happen. If I have to sit out there drinking espresso and popping candy-coated espresso beans to stay awake for it, it WILL happen, back pain be damned!

/pops another Flexiril

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

I'm sorry that your back hurts Honey. Hope it will get better and that surgent isn't nessesary.

/me sends sympathy to honey.

*puts on massage therapist face*

You might want to ask your doctor for a scitic nerve test for sciatica. If it's coming from your lower back and shooting down your leg. It seems to hurt mainly when you are sitting for ponger periods of time and especially in the morning, chances are your L5-L6 vertibrae are pinching the scitic nerve. Massage can certainly help but the biggest help for yourself is ice. Ice on your lower back will help. ice the pathway that the pain is running down. you'll find a quick relief that way. Meanwhile once you get a diagnosis, get a massage. If it's sciatica like it's sounding like it is, get a therapeutic/medical massage therapist that is familiar with treating sciatica or piriformis syndrome (which it also could be but not by the way you are describing it). They don't get prescriptions from doctors, but you'll feel a hell of a lot better. I am a therapeutic/medical massage therapist and I can tell you they do A LOT of good but don't get a lot of respect since massage is not completely accepted in the medical field as therapeutic. I assure you, it is. This is also not somethign you do instead of your doctor's treatment. However, if surgery is tossed in the air, please concider trying massage before jumping into something drastic. If it's a herniated disc (which it probably isn't but I can't diagnose it), you may need surgery, but a good massage therapist (medical/therapeutic) will know ways to may you more comfortable and able to handle the disc while you decide on surgery.

If you were where I live, I'd treat you myself! Sciatica is my specialty ;)

My sister's a massage therapist as well, B. She is very good at what she does. Her husband is a physical therapist as well so I feel like I have help close at hand. I WISH I could go to a chiropractic but unfortunately I have an HMO which does not pay for their services. That will change in October though, I just hope that this won't be considered pre-existing to them, it will definitely impact our decision on whether or not to swap insurances. I loathe them (the insurance company).

A side note, the muscle relaxers are helping so YAY! If it was a pinched nerve they wouldn't help but they have even though it did take a couple of hours for the relief from them to kick in. The exercises also seemed to have helped afterward, even though it was a bit uncomfortable while I was doing them.

Trust me, surgery will be my last resort, only after I've exhausted all other avenues. Thanks for the advice and warm thoughts all. :hug2:

^^^^^^

Take it from me, back pain is usually some kind of warning sign. Be it stress, macular degenration, or simple bad posture, back pain will be one of the first symptoms.

In my case, it's usually stress or posture. I have been increasingly plagued with back troubles for some years now. At the rate I'm going, I'll be a cripple by thirty. I have to be careful just bending over, lest I put my bck out and be unable to move for 6-48 hours. I don't go to a chiropractor, (though all things considered, I really should), and I'm in a world of hurt. My dad does, and his nearly 50-year old back is in better shape than my 16 year old one.

The problem with chiropractors is cost. They tend to be expensive, and not neccesarily covered by the cheaper insurance plans. I don't know what your financial position is, (though judgng by the whole temp agency thing I would suspect you aren't exactly Bill Gates), but if you have the money, it is well worth it.

Sorry to hear about your back. I have a bad hip. For sleeping, I had to get an air mattress. Couldn't afford an expensive one, just bought a Coleman at Walmart. Put that on top of my boxspring in place of reg. mattress. I adjusted the air till it let me sleep. Just a thought. My doc didn't want me taking Ibuprofin because it can cause stomach problems, ulcers, etc. She gives me Darvocet, just in case you have trouble with the Ibuprofin. I know Tylenol quit working for me years ago.

Hope everything works out for you with your back, the sale, the job and that the birthdays are happy. Take care of yourself though, don't push too hard and end up in hospital.

Darvocet doesn't touch my pain. I've already tried it. Ibuprofen didn't either. The Flexiril is helping. I'm not sure if it is knocking me out or the fact that I've only had around 8 hours of sleep over the past 3 days due to the pain is what's knocked me out. I think it's the second though. I think now that the severity of the pain is gone I've just been catching up on sleep. At any rate, I don't think it's a nerve issue (thank God). I do believe with the exercises and muscle relaxer as well as the Naproxen (anti-inflammatory) I'll be fine soon. Ibuprofen has never bothered my stomach. I was taking it religiously when this pain started although it wasn't helping.

CP, no, I don't have the money to pay for the chiropractor, especially until I get a job. I wish I did. Hopefully, in a few weeks all will be well again anyway. Thanks again everyone. :)
