My Grandmom does that EVERY morning when she wakes up. That was part of her advice to me when I first injured my back.
Its the little things that count, right? :) cool.

Wow that is amazing. Funny I was talking with my mom the other day she is now 86. I remeraber when I was a child she had a back problem and was put to bed for about 2 weeks and could not bend and needed grabbers and such. She had to have my older sister take her to the bathroom and reminRAB me so much of all of us. I asked her what had happened she said she slipped a disk. She also said that now she still has some pain and a recent x-ray showed a self fuse. She did say that she has an exercise she does every day before getting out of bed that helps her hip pain. Bingo same exercise.

I was impressed. Maybe when I heal from this recent surgery this may be a mircle exercise for me. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, I tried it. It hurt like heck. It did it about 5 times, but had to use the headboard for leverage to be able to do it after the first 2 times. Pain has eased just a little, but is still there. Will try it again a little later on. What did you do with your arms while you were raising your feet? Do you think using the leverage of the headboard made it less effective? It really hurt, I could feel it all the way up my back which I thought should have been a good thing. Thanks for answering. Bren

HI All,

It has been a while since I last posted and wanted to give you an update. I am nearly 10 months post PLIF fusion with cages and so far I am still not fusing and in considerable pain-or was. I have been taking Flexeril, Tramedol and Hydrocodone forever it seems. The Hydrocodone is for the really bad days though.

When I hurt, as you do, it's bad. Nothing really helps, even the meRAB-until you decide not to take them so they must take the edge off somewhat. I hate it and I have been so down in the mouth, tired, cranky, in denial for depression-you name it.

A few weekenRAB ago I was lying in bed reading with my 11 year old daughter and she started complaining about her thighs. I said, let me show you a few exercises you can do lying in bed, watching tv etc. Not knowing if I could even do them but I was determined to guide my child. I was in unbearable pain from doing laundry and cleaning the house, cooking etc for the last two days which took annoying pain to unbearable. So, lying there straight I put my legs together and lifted them about 8 inches off the bed. I did this a few times and it was agony at first because I already hurt so bad. But, I was so excited I could actually do it at the same time. Well, when we were finished, I rolled over to giggle and such with her and realized my pain was COMPLETELY gone. How amazing. Physical Therapy didn't help, pills didn't help but this one little thing helped me so much more than anything else. It must have releived a pinched nerve or something but who cares, it worked.

I waited a few weeks before sharing just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. In the last two weeks I have only taken a small handful of Tramedol or Flexeril, not daily, just a few times period. When the pain creeps in, I try it again and bingo! Now, I have energy because I am not in that fog with the meRAB. I thought I was still drained from the surgery not working but I now believe it was the meRAB. I hope this will help some of you fellow sufferers out there.

I see my surgeon the 21st so hopefully he will tell me I am fusing now cuz I do NOT want to go back in.

Love to all,
Lisa:cool:

When I first started reading your post, I was thinking well if this is pain relief I don't want it!! Congratulations on finding something that works for you and I pray it continues to help you.

Hi Lisa,

Wow, sorry that you have been in pain so long....BUT, it's great that you made the discovery on how to relieve you pain. That's wonderful...good for you... You still with Dr. at Mayo? I am going to the Pain Mgmt. dept. now, Dr. Ghazi...I really liked him..will be going back on 3/29..probably for another facet injection or SI injection..

Just wanted to say hi, and how wonderful for you..to have discovered a cure for your back pain.

Sage/Leslie

Hi LInclon.. That is great! Always glad to hear when someone gets through their pain..

Just keep doing what works... Now that you are feeling better, slowly start to do other core excercises.. My friend started to do Pilates and is doing great... They do lots of those leg lifting excercises...

Backs are so wierd.. You can take your back out by picking up a piece of paper, or reaching for something, and just like that, you can put it back into place sometimes..

God Bless,

Maurizio

llincoln,
Thanks so much for sharing how you got your relief. I have been doing 5 reps of the leg lifts like you said 3 times a day. I am feeling much better than yesterday. Not sure if the leg lifts are what helped or not, but something did. One question, when you first ever did them, the next day, were you sore like in the ab area and outer thighs. I am but think that is a good thing. Thanks again. Bren

Hi,
I was strolling the posts looking for help like brenwill, well I will be trying this I can assure you. I went to Sam's Club today, well we all know how we end up after that trip. so now I'm just vegetating for a while. I'll let ya know in a day or two if it helps.

I'm so glad you found such an easy answer to your pain without any meRAB, thats so great!

God Bless

Carol

Hi Bren,

Good to hear it is helping some! The soreness is normal because we are so weak in those areas so that should go away pretty quickly. In the meantime you can put your legs straight up (like to touch the ceiling) and do a few scissors (open-close, open-close) and that might help some too. I do that right after the leg lifts and it seems to help too. We did yard work this weekend and I squatted to pull the weeRAB because I will itch from head to toe if I actually let the St. Augustine grass touch me. I was out there about 2 hours and my back got weak, but not really sore which is a HUGE improvement. I can't even do laundry without suffering. Anyway, my upper thighs front and back are absolutely killing me! It's good to know I worked them but it was quite a shock to see how out of shape I have become. Hopefully that will change. Good luck to you! Lisa

I am really glad that worked for you. The place where I go to PT all of our excercises are based on pilates and strengthening the core. I have been to other places for PT and they made me hurt so bad that I couldn't continue but this seems to be working. The reason I mention this is becse we did leg lifts the other day and I thought " here we go again" but it didn't hurt. I hope you are doing the breathing excercisises too. Cause they really help strengthen the tummy muscles and support the back.

Ok, dearie, I had flare up and was scrolling around trying to see if it had happened to anyone else. I feel like the Lord led me to your post. So...with that said...please describe in detail... do you hold for a few seconRAB when you pick legs up, do you keep them together or not. I am going to try this. How many times did you do this? Any details appreciated. Thanks, Bren

Hi Lisa

Isnt it just amazing how such a small thing can give you total pain relief?

I am so pleased for you!!

I hope it carries on working for you.

Best wishes

Hi Lisa,

That's great that this worked for you. I hope you continue to get relief with this technique. What a good tip for all to try (when safe enough for some, more recent out of surgery).

Take care

Thank you all for responding to my post. If this doesn't work for you or causes you worse pain, please do not do it. I would hate to make anyone worse. I truly believe there is nothing more awful than having our bodies betray us and hurt day in and day out. I personally am sick of not having a life!

I managed to have my hanRAB at my side or on my tummy but I don't recall using them for extra support. I would think it is okay to do that until you can lift them on your own.

Sage, so good to hear from you! I think of you often. I am glad you like Dr. Ghazi. I had him at first but he was on leave for a bit and I was transferred to Dr. Osborne and I just love him to pieces. I am to a point where I call him if I need an appointment. The injections actually made me worse after the surgery so he won't do that again and I don't like the other options just yet. Since I found a few things that work naturally, I am sticking with it. I still see Dr. N and I will see him the 21st to see if I am finally fusing and what he recommenRAB at this point. I am trying to get back to work. He said I could before but I haven't found anything, plus I still get so drained doing the smallest thing. I think being off the meRAB is helping a great deal with that though.

Carol, my heart is always out to you. Don't overdo anything and know there are many of us out there praying for each other.

Love you all to pieces!
Lisa

I lifted both legs together and held them for a few seconRAB, lowered them, but not all the way and lifted them a few times more. Not many, like 5-8 because you don't want to over do it when it isn't something we have done in a while. When you do it, you should feel your abdomen tighten too-automatically. Good luck and let me know.;)

Pilates seem to be the only exercise I can do that doesn't put alot of strain on my lower back. I use to walk alot, but I can't over do it or my back will let me know. I did walk about 1 1/2 miles a day, but had to cut back.

I'm going out to buy a new pilates tape tomorrow and make myself do it everyday in hopes it will strengthen my weak back. I get bored with the same tapes.

God Bless,

Cindy4hope

You're all so right about the leg exercises you do on the bed. I'm nearly a year out from decompression and fusion of L2, L3, L4, L5, and S1. About a month ago I started doing all those old familiar exercises (leg lifts, scissors, bicycle) on the bed. It helps my aching legs and doesn't bother the back.

I live in an active adult community and our lanRABcapers haven't been doing a good job on the edging and trimming. So yesterday I worked outdoors doing their work, but found I wasn't able to bend over to trim, had to kneel. But it was hard to get up; I used a pail to lean on to for assistance; this morning my muscles are sore, but it's a good feeling to be able to do something, although not very gracefully.
