Back pain goes away while pregnant--why??

Hi!

I know that my situation is probably opposite of the norm, but when I am pregnant, my back pain goes away. Usually around 20ish weeks.

Quick background: Ive had back pain for probably about 10 years now...Cant remeraber what exactly my MRI results were offhand, but I know there was disc dessication in there, nerve impingement, small tear in one disc, bulging--stuff like that. I believe around the L4/L5 level.

I have pretty severe pain that usually starts about an hour after I get out of bed...Gets worse throughout the day. By 2 or 3pm it is around a 7...By 5 or 6 Ive got to lie down cause I can no longer sit up anymore without pretty bad pain. If I lie down for a few hours, it will go away for a while. Then the process starts all over the next day. The pain is at a very specific (and I was told by one doctor, "strange") location: in my mid-back on my right side, slightly to the right of my spine. About halfway between shoulder blade and waist.

Anyway, my question is--does anyone have any idea why being pregnant would make it stop hurting? Usually pregnancy causes back pain! Is it the fact that Ive gained weight (usually end up gaining about 40 lbs)? Or is it that my huge stomach is somehow changing the muscles/nerves so that it doesnt hurt anymore? Im desperate to know, because I truly dread the pain starting again (Im currently about 26 wks). You get so used to being in pain every day that you dont really think about it too much, but then when it mercifully stops, you realize how much better life is when its gone. I have tried explaining this to doctors, thinking maybe theyd have some idea and some way to replicate whatever it was during pg that was stopping my back pain, but they always blow me off. ANY help would be appreciated so much! Thank you!
