back pain and dr won't help... :(

Krysta, I feel your pain! I have had "back trouble", since my pregnancy with my son, who is now 6 and 1/2 years old. My back first "went out", after his birth. I dealt with the pain, until May of 2007, without any treatment or medication. Then in May of 2007, my back "went out" for the second time. I had x-rays and a MRI two weeks after that, which showed abnormalities, due to the degenerative disc disease. Physical therapy and lurabar injections made my condition worse! I also just found out that I have nerve compression in both of my wrists and hanRAB (the right is worse because of me being right handed) with a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS). My first neurosurgeon appointment was on January 22, 2008, and he wants to use surgery (a fusion), as a "last resort." I also have a heart condition and high blood pressure (that is due to the chronic pain). I take an anti-inflammatory, Soma (muscle relaxant), Mobic, Hydrocodone 5/500 (for pain), Tramadol (up to 200 mg daily), and several "natural" remedies daily, just for my back! Please don't give up and hopefully you can search and find a doctor that is willing to do whatever it takes to give you adequate pain relief!
 
i have had BAD back pain for over a year now! lower back pain and burning and pain shooting down my thighs. i have to roll out of bed. i can't sit or stand for a long period of time. so therefore i can't work.
i have had an mri done. it showed that i have a few discs that are deteriated and a bulging disc and problems with my s1... (or si)..?

and doctor says, excersize (which i do, until i can't move) and stop smoking. i am going insane with pain!! i am 29!!!!! and i can't even play with my kiRAB half the time. i can't roller blade for more than 30 minutes. it hurts if i walk for more than 2 blocks.

thanks so much for all the advise! i feel ya on the pain issue! i have had migraines since i was 15. i also have a small ulcer. and i have sleep paralysis. and to top it off about 3 days ago my throat started getting scratchy and my inner ears, like deep in where you can't reach, itches really bad. especially when i swallow or yawn. i am going insane cause its starting to hurt. i am just falling apart!! lol
 
ok..its well past time for a new MRI!!
2ndly...you need to call your primary care physician and tell them the problems that you are having with your back...and back dr...and ask for them to refer you to another dr...preferably the BEST neurosurgeon (not neurologist!)...neurosurgeons are specialized in dealing with back issues that involve the nerves. the ones in my state will not see you unless you have a current MRI...(they will but its a waste of their time to give you an appt, then have to send you to get one, and dont like it if you show up to your first appt without a current MRI)....so I would ask your primary care dr to see if they will get it ordered and authorized for you to have one done, so that you will have that current, up date MRI for your next dr.
do not waste anymore time on a dr that doesnt seem to care. you are suffering needlessly, getting worse needlessly. start the process of getting a new dr asap...good luck and please keep us posted on how things are going with you.
 
Hello and welcome to the board, krysta...You will easily find that everyone here is more than willing to help you with any problems or questions that you may have. I am also 29 years old and have degenerative disc disease in my lower lurabar spine and now in my cervical spine, as well. Do you have a copy of the written MRI report? If so, what was the impression? What medication(s) do you take for your condition? Have you seen a spine specialist of any kind? Do you do physical therapy or any other conservative treatments? I apologize for all of the ?'s but this type of information will help us better to understand your condition. Thanks, in advance.
 
i just seen my regular dr this month. and he knows everything that is going on with my back. and so does the spine sp. and i seen the spine sp. last week!!!! but i will see if he will refer me to a neuroseurgon.

that was my spine specalist that told me that. i do have a copy of the mri report. the only meRAB they have me on is vicodin. i had an epideral in my back and it made it worse. i also went through a year of physical therapy. but my back is just getting worse.

im at a loss!
 
what kind of dr were you seeing? the s1 is the L5-S1 disc/nerve area...of which I have problems with. if your dr wont help...its time to move on! see a neurosurgeon....not JUST for surgery...but they can offer you physical therapy, pain meRAB, and injections...before surgery is offered. when was your last MRI done? if you dont have the report...get a copy of it. if its been more than 6 months since it was done...you will need to have an updated one. im not sure why your dr isnt taking you seriously...but its time you throw him to the curb and find someone that will listen to you!! im speaking from experience....so please...listen! they say that disc problems CAN heal on their own...but if they havent after conservative treatment...(physical therapy, injections, rest, pain meRAB) after 6 months, its time to talk surgery. but that doesnt mean that you WILL need surgery....just yet anyway....i have been dealing with mine for almost 2 years....and am going to see a neurosurgeon next month to see what my options are. they say the longer it is allowed to persist without treatment....the more of a chance in having permenant nerve damage...so i really wouldnt wait much longer to see another dr. good luck and let us know how it goes!
 
i have had an injection and physical therapy and im on vicodin right now!! my mri was 2 years ago. and i know it is worse. i just seen him last week. i have the state insurance card. so my regular dr has to refer me. otherwise insurance won't let me. i have probs with 4 different discs.!! i don't know how to get them to take me serious. and the spine sp. was like this 25 year old weasel, who looked scared to see me in a dang gown. grrr. i am just lost.
