Well, I felt like typing up alittle something, so here it goes.
When I was first had the severe injury to my back (2 extruded discs 8 months ago), not even a week into it and the inability to hardly walk, my cat of 15 years got extremely sick, I brought her to the vet ( SO drove) and she had to be put down that day. Broke my heart, and my kiRAB hearts. She had been not feeling well on and off a few weeks prior, but eating and going to the bathroom.
It was terribly lonely, being bedridden, in a silent house, with the kiRAB returing to school, I usedto be a vet tech a long time ago, animals are part of my life. My daughter (16) begged for a new kitten. I thought and thought about it, making her PROMISE she'd do the feeding and catbox, and we discussed the long commitment yet again, as our other cat we had for 15 years. I asked my mom, and suprised her one day with a drive to the local pet store as I called and they had kittens. Spend 20$ get a free kitten.
She texted me a picture of each one in the litter and we agreed on which one to take, and I was in love and she was too, and they came home with this TINY kitten (vet said only 5 weeks old if that). Amazingly, this little black and white kitten, HAD to be with a human, if she could not see you, she'd mew and mew until you called her and she'd follow you voice as she could not see distance at all, cling herself up the huge couch and lay on your chest, if you went to the bathroom or anywhere, she'd follow you, or I'd just carry her once I learned she HAD to be with a human constantly.
I was bedridden, and at most times, could only get SOME pain reief that stopped me from uncontrollably crying only in a certain position on my couch, and thankfully this little ball of fur would come and stay with me all day long, day in and day out, at 2 in the morning when I could't sleep or anytime while I was home alone all day long.
It truly brightened my days, even in the most extreme pains you couldn't imagine. She'd bundle up next to my neck, and nuzzle, we named her Buffy (as in vampire slayer due to the neck nuzzling). She has spent every moment with me for the past 8 months I have been stuck bedridden on my back.
When we backtracked her age that the vet said, turns out she was born the same week I was injured. Through all this time she is my surgery companion, follows me even to the bathroom, and lays with me all day and night, never leaving my side. She's alittle skitso, races around, attacks my bad leg when I try to get it in bed, among other things, now she chews on my cane lol, but I must say, I would be in much worse spirits if I did not have this little furball to be by my side alone all day long in an empty home, kiRAB are at school and sports getting older and home less, and I can't even drive yet-still.
It makes the days not so long, or lonely. She comes and purrs like a lawnmower, and at almost 8 months old now and MUCH bigger, still attempts to snuggle in my neck and take a nap thinking she's still this tiny little thing.
SO anyone out there, who is an animal lover, past or present, and has room for love, AND someone else home to do the catbox and feed her (even though I can pull it off with my grippy stick now), truly just like they bring animals to the hospitals to cheer people up, it truly does work, she is my surgery buddy and I adore her.
Food for thought when you're stuck home injured alone for the most part. They do make the difference. Back surgeries (I'm on my second) are a LONG haul recovery, and when you're truly down and out and miserable crying from pain, being home alone just makes it even more depressing. I couldn't have made it through as far as I have without my little furball. I mean, my mom brought her to her vets appointments as I can't drive, so you'd haveto find someone to do that, (spay/vaccines), but, I would't trade it for the world and I woudn't get into the better spirits I do without her coming and trying to cuddle all the time.
