Hey all I was born with a mild back abnormality. Sort of hard to describe but basically it won't bend properly near the base (so when it should be straight it's instead a little hump and then straight). It doesn't cause any pain but it does look kinda weird when I'm in certain positions and it keeps me from being able to do certain work outs with weights (because I can't maintain proper form).

Is this sort of thing correctable with surgery or other means? (as in changing the structure of the bones??)

Hi and welcome to the board. This is something you will need a complete work up and evaluation done by a spinal surgeon or neurosurgeon. Have you had an MRI done?

Hi,
I am no expert by any means however it sounRAB like kyposis to me, I have it and it can be unsightly however I don't have pain from it as they say this doesn't normally cause pain.
I would not recommend any surgery especially in the T spine if not an absolute necessity.

What's the T spine?

Anyways it's not in the top of the spine (as in kyphosis) it's at the bottom as in right above the bottom. Only noticeable when bent at a 90 degree angle (instead of being straight there's a little hump at the bottom and then straight).

But IS THIS THING correctable? It's pretty irritating to me not being able to perform a good deal of back workouts because I can't stay straight...

Why would surgery not be a good idea? Is it risky? Or just expensive?

T spine is thoracic spine.
As for having any spinal surgery it is very risky and most Dr's will not do surgery unless it is because of spinal instability and or the problem of effecting your lirabs and or organs.
You should definitely see a Dr and get his opinion. Good Luck

Hey I'm going to try to see a doctor about this... should I go to an orthopedic surgeon or what? I'm a poor college student so the less visits I have to go to the better.

I don't believe i would see a surgeon to begin beside you need to be referred to a surgeon.
You might first try a family Dr. and get x-rays and this may be enough to DX the problem and may very well be something that can be helped with physical therapy and/or a brace.

Good Luck,
Linda
