Babysitting- no one calls! how should i approach getting more business?

I have been babysitting for about 4 years now for various families in my neighborhood. Three families have used me as a babysitter frequently in the past, but they have stopped calling for the past couple of months. I understand it might be because of the recession, but how should I approach them to let them know I'm free over summer and available to babysit? I was thinking about saying, "Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I'm out for summer break and available to babysit. Just give me a call whenever you need a babysitter." Any more input? Advice is greatly appreciated!

you might come off as a little pushy...maybe just move on to advertising on a local bulletin board or advertising in the paper for more families. If they need you they will call you.

Chances are they are aware of the fact that your still able to babysit for them. I know myself, sometimes I won't call my babysitter for a couple months here and there. It's a money thing. Sometimes you can't afford it for whatever reason and going out is not an option. When they have work for you I am sure they will call you.

Since you are looking for more work, I would consider mentioning to them that you are free for the summer and ask them if they know of any family/friends that are looking for a babysitter. Maybe they could spread the good word for you to people they know. I know am always recommending my babysitter to friends of mine. It gives my babysitter extra jobs considering I only use her once a month at the most.

I would also consider posting flyers on your local community boards where you think people with kids would most frequent in your area. For example, grocery stores or rec. centres. If you have the extra money I would even consider posting an add in the paper saying your available whenever throughout the summer. Have your mom/dad recommend you to people at work or people they know with kids. That might also help things along. If none of that works out I would consider printing up some flyers and dropping them off in peoples mail boxes.Best of luck and hopefully you get some calls soon.

What about making a flyer for your business on your computer and handing them out all over the neighborhood? That might drum up some business and you can tell them your hours of availability (don't put your prices on there because some other sitter might try to undercut you).
