Hi guys, For the last couple of weeks, every time I cough or sneeze I get a horrible stabbing pain in my back (about halfway down, slightly to the right). The pain is like a knife being driven in and then twisted, it really is the worst pain I've ever felt. It can take from 5 minutes to 30 minutes to go completely. I have been told that I have degenerative disks in my back, but that is more at the bottom of my back than the middle. I don't know why this has started so suddenly, it has only been for the last few weeks and I have has back problems for years and years. Any suggestions would be great,

Thanks

Jack.

Jack,

I'm no doctor, but the area you are describing is close to your kidneys so I wonder if there could be a possible kidney stone? My husband has had kidney stones and describes the pain very similar to what you mention.

You might want to see a doctor to get their opinion, especially if it doesn't go away soon.

Jack have had the same thing for a couple of weeks, just thought it was some sort of viral infection. I have found that if I bend over before coughing, it really minimizes that negative effects. Just can't do that if you're driving though.

It could be a muscle that is tightening up when you cough or sneeze. You could get a massage to try and loosen up the muscles in that area to see if you can get some relief. You would need to get a deep tissue massage to help that out. :)
