.avi and Divx

The on thing that I really don't like about Android is the lack of ability to play different filetypes of video. Do you guys think that with the higher resolution of the newer devices and the added power and RAM that we might see some apps that enable avi or Divx? Or just an update to Android in the future that would? With the Nexus One's harware I should easily be able to play a dvd quality movie. Nokia's N900 with Maemo can already do this but, I've heard too much about unstability and reboots so I want to stick with Android.

Higher resolution means more work, so this isn't an advantage in terms of being able to process video faster, it just means it can look better if it works. The faster processor, however, is a good thing.

I don't understand why there aren't already some DivX players, or similar, out there. The YouTube app plays videos very well. YouTube videos are an FLV stream, which in many cases is an FLV wrapper around an MPEG4 comtainer. DivX is a form of MPEG4, so, I don't understand why playing DivX wouldn't be less work than playing some YouTube videos.

Good question!

yeah this is needed in android, but i think that it will be put in there, the thing is we want it now! but we also forget that android is still a baby. some other phones have been out there for more then 3 yrs and alot more then that, and we got so much in so lil time, it wouldnt surprise me to see flash and everything else thrown into android this year

While that is true on a technical side, it is an advantage I would think. With lower resolutions it doesn't make much sense to have the ability to play DVD quality video so, converting to a "mobile" format didn't seem too much of a big deal. However, the higher resolution means at least DVD quality potentially. Now that there is a reason to have the ability, it would be nice to see the ability.

Yes, it's still a baby but the N900 is the very first phone with Maemo and it has the ability. It can't be too difficult to do. I just wonder, will it be solved with an app or with an update?

+ 1 for divx support

Definetly a good feature and it would allow me to play my movies that are in avi with having the need to convert them

Supposedly YXflash I think its called can do DivX. I didn't try it because although its free on the market, the program asks you to buy it and its $20. I refuse to buy something that isn't up front about their price on the market.

U guys have to remember, that a pc and cnets www.download.com can help u find a free video converter, tur 1gb to 300mb and right format for ur phone to play, its easy. All_u_have_2_do_is_READ

I'm amazed the guys at portableapps haven't gotten involved in developing for the android scene. They have managed to make cut-down versions of VLC/OpenOffice etc that fir on small USB sticks, and I was really hoping they would be at the front of android development

I'm pretty sure we all know we can convert the files but, that's an extra hassle that should be necessary. I don't want to have to compress and degrade my video, my screen is 800x480 for god sakes. I can have at least SD DVD quality video on my screen, so give me a way to make it possible. I've converted tons of video in the past, for PSP, for iPod touch, for my old Blackberry, etc... But those all had lower screen resolutions so I was actually improving what the video looked like on those screens.
