Totally understand comments like this - the sheer quality of the CGI doesn't come across in still pictures or even on a small screen.

On a cinema screen in 3D though, it's near-flawless. Promise.
 
wow dude, talk about missing the point, i was the one defending cg against the broad simplistic attacks. its not that cg is the problem, its that the character design is not compelling. it doesn't matter how nice your render technique if the tools don't produce anything of substance. the question is does it look cool..., its a design matter, not a cgi matter. and from the trailer many of us were just left underwhelmed, even those of us who would love to see more cg as it could push the boundaries of film. think you are replying to someone else and quoting me for some reason. warcraft the "game" looks like a cartoon world, the CG in all blizzard games however is cutting edge and nothing at all cartoonish, its hyper fantasy realistic. i think you are confusing in game graphics with the high quality cg blizzard has always included in its games.

I dont think anyone is against the film, just the hype. Far too much. If I hear that Avatar is going to 'change film' once more, I will scream.
 
Sequel idea??

After trying to steel the oil from the Navi's home planet Pandora for humanitarn reasons and failing.....the Americans fake (again) a number of terrorists attacks on their own soil. They blame Osama Bin Navi for these attacks and plan once again to invade but this time they have the worlRAB backing. The Navi put up a good fight - mainly thanks to the equipment the Americans sold the Navi to defeat the Thundercats 20 years before.

Simon Pegg twittered that it 'changed the game' or something like that. Maybe it looks much better in 3D than it does on a small internet trailer.

i've never been so unexcited about anything ever. i reckon its going to get awful reviews and we're going to see the beginning of the great anti-CGI uprising and a return to 'real' fx. it looks absolutely rubbish! like the clone wars but with a few extra hundred mill spent on it.
 
Well, yeah, but everytime i've said that i just seem to get the usual "hater" response where they tell me that their opinion is valid too (which it is.......after they've seen the film).

the facial acting might be more convincing which is the big hurdle to get over in cgi. all those christmas carol type films have a dead corpsy look to them still. perhaps avatar finally fixes that.

that being said, i worry. cameron is a great film maker, but many like him go bad when they are given too much power. the original ending for the abyss was both bad, and lefty nonsense. its on the SE dvd if you like to see how bad... or read the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Abyss#Director.27s_cut
and with this film i see that creeping back in, it looks to be another noble savage that loves nature vs the bad bad westerners/humans type flick. perhaps its more than that, but from the trailer it made me worry.

the whole ethnic cat people character design bit isn't that compelling for me either.
 
Also saw it at the premiere on Thursday (it was technically embargoed till today, but they forgot to tell the people at the premiere that, so a bunch of reviews slipped out over the weekend). The cgi is astoundingly good, to the point you forget your watching cgi characters (which is something i never really thought i'd say, as i've always had issues with the 'dead eyed' look of cgi characters in the past.)

The story is a bit predictable, which is going to cause some negative feedback i think, but it's a perfectly serviceable plot. Plus you tend to stop thinking about the fact you know where it's going, and get wrapped up in how the film gets there.

I think Simon Pegg is right, despite what you think of Avatar overall as a movie, it is 'game changing' in that it shows what can now be done with digital characters and environments. The level of detail is quite breath taking. For that alone it's worth seeing. And I would see it at a cinema or IMAX, in 3D. It's the first movie i've seen where I thought the 3D actually made a real difference to the experience.
 
Empire are notably hyperbolic about these things (Attack of the Clones also got a 5/5 review from 'em). After all the hype they've given it over the past year, they were hardly in a position to give it anything else.

And, "banging on about becoming one with Mother Eywo" WTF?
