Avatar ??

I have to say I am not impressed by what i have seen and read so far, it just sounRAB like more of the style over substance thing that Cameron has had going pretty much from The Abyss onwarRAB. Of course this might not prove to be the case, but I have my reservations about it, and I think they are justified. Films that are hyped to this extent seldom live up to their billing.

just a general bad vibes thing. the narrative seems cliched... yes the westerners gonna rob the noble savages. the alien character design aka cat people doesn't inspire. it just looks sorta creepy. if he had spent that money doing a warcraft universe or such instead i'm sure the excitement level would be much higher. mainly it doesn't seem very cool at all. the mech designs remind us of matrix 3 which is not good at all. and of course when cameron gets political it can get ugly, like the directors cut of the abyss with the awful alien ending.

it's getting some excellent reviews though. 90-odd percent on rottentomatoes with comments that seem to reassure that the CGI stuff isn't just some gimmick, it actually seems to work

Apparently it's been denied that the budget was $500 million.

Anyway I don't really know what to think - I really don't understand what the story's going to be about.

I haven't been this hyped for a movie since Watchmen came out.

As far as I can tell from the trailer, the film has earth millitary landing on a planet called Pandora, set on stripping it of a natural resource (some kind of rock). However to do that they need to get the native aliens (Na'vi) out of the way.

Rather than taking the resources by force, the plan is to put some of millitary personnel into a host Na'vi body (an Avatar) and negotiate with the natives.

I assume from that point the protagonist learns more about the natives eventually siding with them, over the earth millitary in a Dances with Wolves/ The Last Samurai style plot twist.

Titanic got a lot of excellent reviews and for me it one of the worst films i have sat through in my life though! Like I said, I will be happy to be proved wrong, I loved his earlier work, especially Aliens and Terminator.

Fairy snuff!

I agree, Cameron is an awesome director - I can't think of anything that he's done that I've not liked, but this just looks.. hmm.. I dunno.

Mind you, saying that, I was very sceptical of Wall-E before that came out, and lo and behold, it was an absolute classic!

One of the nicest things in life is being proved wrong to the positive ;)

well horses for courses....I know most people don't share my views on it!:D

Won't be long now till we get to see how this one has turned out! :)

There have been a couple of short making of videos around and it looks a lot better in those clips. Even though we've seen a lot of the CGI Pandora environment I reckon they're holding a LOT back from us. Yes it looks like a PS3 cutscene a lot of the time, and pretty cheesy, but that's just on the surface.

How can people come out with quotes like he should have done a Warcraft universe Blahblahblah and then complain about the SFX and CGI in the trailers being poor, cheesy etc...when lets be straight Warcraft the game looks like a cartoon world;) I cant wait too see it and will reserve any judgement until so:)

Having seen the trailer, I'm pretty underwhelmed with the blue people thing he's got going on. Doesn't look like my sort of thing, but I'll probably give it the once over when it arrives on DVD.

Is this film supposed to look like a computer game? or is it dodgy CG?

I only ask as the footage I have seen so far doesn't look natural CG in the Lord of the Rings type way. Its more Halo.
