Perhaps you should be a bit clearer with your language.

Quoting one of my comments, then using "you" multiple times and referring to "what happened here", does make it sound like what you wrote was directed specifically at my comments in this thread.

What exactly is wrong with their methodology in relation to the unadjusted figures? Surely their figures do give a more representative indication of the relative success of a movie.
 
the figures at box offce mojo are only adjusted for inflation for US domestic , so basically if a film does much better overseas then this isn't reflected.

besides - Titanic is over 12 years old and nothing has come close to it even with inflation over that time , so the fact that Avatar may beat Titanic is amazing .

Not at all. They have factored in one big difference and completely ignored another. As it happens if you correct for long term trend in the popularity of movie going then that would likely bump more modern movies up the list which actually supports your original argument. But then we could have an argument about the popular success of a movie versus its critical acclaim.
 
I wasnt saying it was a definitive measure - I guess there is actually no such thing as one.

The most important thing is whether a person enjoyed the movie - if they did then it has done its job - regardless of the box office takings or critical aclaim.

Some of the most raved about movies - and some of the highest earners are on my "worst movie ever" list.

Incidentally I liked Avatar. Is it the best movie ever - not IMO, but technically - it is a masterpiece.
 
I would say that the Hurt Locker was a better drama - Avatar is undoubted technical achievement and if I want something to entertain me I will more likely for it over hurt locker.
 
I took special care to stay awake (this time) and pay attention throughout the recent showing of Citizen Kane on TV. And I found it unentertaining apart from the odd one-liner with a deathly dull story line. Some interesting technical innovations but all the voice-overs reallly dated it. But considered by many in the industry to be still the best film of all time.
