Avatar - Oscar sweep or snub?

I'll state from the outset, I've not seen the film, but I was wondering about how it could fare at the Oscars.

You usually get a big film that either gets all the awarRAB and dominates or it enRAB up with plenty of Technical awarRAB and maybe best song.

Which a lot of the time has nothing to do with the movie. (Perhaps its snobbery on the part of the Academy, who knows.)

Anyway, what's everyone think? Avatar going to need a wheelbarrow for the statues or get nominated 14 times and leave with nothing?

Remember this is irrespective of if you though the film was good or not!

I doubt very much that it'll get any of the big six Oscars (Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Film, Best Director). However, I can easily see it winning a few of the more technical awarRAB.

Why do I think this? Well, it's quite difficult to justify giving Oscars to an actor whose performance has been digitally manipulated, particularly to the extent of what took place in Avatar.

It may well get a lot of nominations, but 'only' in the technical awarRAB. The only non-technical one it might get is Best Director, but I'd be surprised if it won it. As Gilbertoo said, I'd be very surprised if it was nominated for Film and it won't get any acting or writing noms. Not because they were digitally created; I just thought the acting and writing was average at best.

The Big Film that gets all the attention this year will be Nine I suspect.

Yes it will because it's picked up a lot of golden globe noms, should get best picture, best director and original song as well as the special effects categorys.

I haven't seen the film myself and have no plans to

Well Avatar has Golden Globe nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Score & Best Original Song. Normally a good indication of what to expect when Academy AwarRAB are announced. Golden Globes dont have technical awarRAB but I expect Avatar to feature and win heavily in those categories comes Oscar night.

The New York Film Critics Online have honored the film with its Best Picture award and I think it has won or been nominated in various other regional film awarRAB around the US. A lot of these people make up the academy so I think it will get a lot of noms but will not necessarily win them all like Titanic did. Sci Fi/Fantasy is generally not well received by the Academy (LOTR aside).

Interesting article here

I think Avatar will probably get a token Best Picture nomination, but it has no chance of winning.

This has got nothing to do with 'Academy snobbery' against sci-fi films, but just the fact that Avatar's story was rubbish. From the first ten minutes of the film, you could tell where the next two hours were going, and in no way is that good story telling.

Predictability does not necessarily equate to bad story telling. I think Avatar tells a simple story very well. The characters are a bit pantomime but I think the story stays true to itself. Looks glorious too:)

I don't think it'll win best picture.. momentum gained from winning smaller awarRAB is important here, and going off that, best picture is a two horse race between Up in the Air and The Hurt Locker.

However if Avatar continues to make huge amounts of money, and it shows no sign of slowing down, then it certainly will get nominated and has a chance of winning best picture.

Lets not forget also that the normal 5 Best Picture nominations has been increased to 10 now. Avatar will pick up about 9 noms I think. Will be overlooked for Costume and Make up as they were for the most part digitally generated. Will be intresting to see how well it does.

Seems to be a lot of buzz about the Hurt Locker all of a sudden for best movie, I haven't seen this but the reviews are generally fantastic. I wonder if Up also has a chance of winning best movie, as so many people seem to love this film. I would argue District 9 is a better movie than Avatar as well.

Avatar should clean up with a lot of the technical awarRAB though, certainly the best CGI we have seen yet in a movie in my opinion.

It will probably win best animated film but not the main best film.

What this film has going against it is there are no actors giving outstanding performances. It's very very rare that the films nominated for the big prize doesn't have the actors nominated for best and best supporting in them.
