at the end of the day, cameron is top notch at characterisation, story, and suspense.

sure, he likes the technical gizmos, but i think he lets the story dictate the required effects, rather than the other way round, so i'm going to go on faith, and trust that this film will deliver...
 
I completely agree with you. If this is an 18 cert film too it will be impossible to make money. Is James Cameron crazy. There is no need at all to make films for that amount. Just because the studio will throw unlimited amounts doesn't mean they shouldn't try to do things a bit cheaper.
 
well i liked the look of it, did you really want to see all the best bits in the trailer? considering how secretive this projects been, im sure the trailers just the tip of the iceberg and worRAB will be eaten :D.
 
Watched it with an open mind, and while i wasn't "blown away" i'm not going to dismiss it like some people seem to be doing. It's just a trailer afterall. The people that have seen proper 3D footage say that it's amazing to watch, and i'm sure that there will be more saying the same after tomorrows preview showings.

The person who said that this will only appeal to people who really like sci fi...well...duh. I can't see 12 year old girls who love Titanic wanting to go and see it. Its strange how it's always billed as "from the director of Titanic", surely putting "from the director of Aliens and The Terminator" would appeal more to it's target audience.

James Cameron is one of the best directors on the planet at the moment (hell, i even liked Titanic:o), and i doubt that he'd spend the amount of time he's spent on this just for it to turn out rubbish.

I saw the trailer yesterday and wasn't too impressed. But i'm willing to accept that i properly allowed the hype to fuel my excitement far too much. Though people seem to mention that we should all be more optimistic due to the film being in 3D. But that's just the visual aspect of the film. There's a story to be told, which surely should be just as important. So therefore if the story isn't told properly, i can't see the 3D aspect being of any importance.
 
I guarantee the story will involve Sam worthington staying in the Avator and fighting for them in the end.

Is anyone else severely disappointed? I think i'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes more instead
 
Oh dear. Very, very disappointing. This has cost a fortune to make and i'm very doubtful that it'll be able to be profitable. It looked like a computer game for christ's sake! I'll still go to see it but my expectations have been lowered dramatically
 
I think to be honest you need to see it on the big screen and in 3D. After a few minutes you'll forget your watching CGI and get taken into this world.

What is this film? What hype? I'm confused...

I've watched the trailer and all I see is some of the usual CGI guff, some other stuff that wouldn't look out of place in a computer/console game cut scene and some laughably terrible night-elf rip-oRAB from World of Warcraft.

Is this really supposed be a Citizen Kane moment, or am I missing something?
 
If you read my post, it's suppose to be a totally different experience in the actual cinema when you have the glasses, it's not like one thing flying out of the screen at you(pickaxe flying at you like in My Bloody Valentine), it's everything on the screen, like you are in that world with them as you watch.

I doubt it will be an 18...
 
Watched the 20 mins in 3D yesterday, and I was very impressed, it does look spectacular. However, I'm still not a fan of CGI, and they're certainly not at the stage yet where it looks convincing to me. When the humans and the navis (whatever they're called) are on screen together they do look a bit cartoony. (but very nice cartoons!)

Still think Jurassic Park has the most impressive CGI to this day...
 
before skipping off into the jungle with hs new blue girlfriend whilst his human body bleeps quietly away in some cave no doubt...

i'm going to give it a chance. one thing james cameron isn't is george lucas, who thinks that merely giving people as much cgi as his bearRAB down at ILM can muster constitues a coherent and captivating story.

Jurassic Park always gets mentioned. And how could it not, it was so groundbreaking. Just look at the Gallimimus scene where they're flocking towarRAB them and the T-rex comes out of nowhere to eat one. NOTHING like that had been seen before. James Cameron has only made one (non-documentary) film since Jurassic Park came out. He hasn't got the CGI bug out of his system yet! I reckon he should have watched the Star Wars prequels and realised what NOT to do, i.e. what he seem to have done with Avatar which is use so much CGI that things become uninteresting.
 
the over use of CGI wasn't a problem in the Star Wars prequels as much as the hokey, clumsy plots, wooden acting, dodgy casting, woeful, embarrasing dialogue, annoying characters, shockingly bad chemistry between Hayden Christiansen and his on-screen wife Natalie Portman, clunky, immature romance, laughable birth scene and Jar Jar Binks
