$$$ Avatar Billion Dollar Movie $$$

I'm so glad that Avatar passed the 1 billion dollar milestone worlwide. Its such a remarkable piece of cinema. A lot of people doubted it's selling power and had already laid it off due to it not having that high a first weekend gross in the US. But now it has the record for the highest 2nd and 3rd week US grosses and its passed the 1 billion mark. It will undoubtedly become the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time, with a real shot on becoming no.1 also.

Odd that Avatar is being judged as great by many by virtue of either making a lot of money or using more CGI than other films.
I think Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King should be critically re-appraised for having one of the longest crediit sequences evah. It must have taken them ages and therefore deserves a gold star.

I take it you didn't like it then. Obviously so, because you wouldn't come out with a comment like that if you hadn't seen it.

Myself and half a dozen frienRAB went and saw it a week ago. All of us really enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to see it again. Given that it is breaking box office recorRAB around the world, maybe it's your review and not the movie that's unsavoury?

Go on. Force yourself. You obviously didn't enjoy it - why not?

Ah, yes - Marketing, that great evil. The problem here, however, is that the Marketing really didn't work that well. The initial box office returns for Avatar weren't that good. The fact that they've got better (and better) is down to the best Marketing of all - word of mouth.

I knew absolutely nothing about the movie before seeing it, and the trailers really didn't give anything away at all. Just thought "meh", mediocre action flick.

Absolute suprise when it turned out to be excellent.

from what i can read and understand from IMDB, Avatar has only made 350 mil world wide. i cant find the billion dollar mark at all from this site.
is IMDB not totally up to date?

Avatar has $757 million worldwide as yet on IMDB. Given that there are seemingly more up to date figures its is an astonishing feat.

On the basis of the trailer i saw a while back I wasnt tempted to see it. Why is it so popular?

Well Titanic is 1.8 billion. I guess we will know in a couple of weeks in terms of the drop as time passes and if it gets many oscar nominations. Fingers crossed.

It's a stunning film visually, but I just didn't think there was much more to it. I was kept entertained by what I was seeing, not what was happening, and for that reason I wouldn't want to watch it more than once.

Personally before watching the film i thought it would rely so much on on the visuals that the story itself would be quite poor but i was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't say it was really special but the story was a lot better than i had expected. Visually i think it goes without saying how stunning it is.

Actually, thats what I thought from seeing the trailer. Also, having just twigged about the ticket pricing for 3D films, its hardly surprising its rocketed past 1 billion so quickly. At my cinema tickets are approaching double the standard price.

http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/

1 Titanic Par. $1,842.9
2 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King NL $1,119.1
3 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest BV $1,066.2
4 Avatar Fox $1,025.4
5 The Dark Knight WB $1,001.9

No2 is a cert, 1 a possibility.

Remember; worldwide numbers cannot include inflation (its almost impossible to work this out on a world wide level). Also this does not accurately show ticket sales, in which many other films would come higher. That said, its remarkable that its the 5th film to break a billion worldwide, and the only director to have 2 films to ever break that.
