I definitely give Cameron his props as a director-- a movie of this scale can't be easy to manage-- but my pick for Best Director is still Kathryn Bigelow. If the aim of a director is to wring as many strong feelings out of the audience as possible, as Avatar did for you, she has to be my pick.

Well everyone's not going to love it and that's understandable. No shame, no fowl.

I do agree, the script wasn't original or complex, but as Ron-Cullen said it evoked such strong feelings of inspiration and excitement in so many people that IMO it can't be ignored. What Avatar brings as a total package was beyond the norm IMO. James Cameron took an age old story and took it to the next level.

I think at the very least it should get Best Director. It was just amazing to see him put together a movie of this scale and with such detail with pretty much no set. Absolutely amazing.

I watched this 2 weeks ago in 3D and I was amazed. It was such a beautiful experience. I didn't like the storyline, but visually, I was mesmerized. I think Zoe Saldana was brilliant through the motion capture technology, bringing Neytiri to life is such a way. :sigh:

Really?! What sequels do you think shouldn't be mentioned in this thread?!

Anyways I totally agree with you on that part. Totally worth it if we wait for two years or so. :sigh:

So true, you do have a good point. That's good idea if he just do both ways so it'll be a little bit faster when third movie gets released.

The only immersion I felt was the superficial immersion of the 3-D glasses. True immersion comes as a result of character development, of which there was nearly none. The feelings of morality which we as the audience were meant to feel were essentially spoon fed to us. It's a simplistic story with an underlying message about respecting nature that has been done before. I frankly just didn't care much about what happened to any of the characters at the end of the day.

The story itself doesn't go beyond the norm, it is the norm. I felt as though I had seen this movie dozens of times before, only on a less technologically advanced level. This film deserves every technical award it will inevitably get, but this kind of bland storytelling should really not be championed. If you enjoyed the film, more power to you, and you're obviously not alone, but I would trade all the bedazzlement a computer can muster for a beautifully composed script.

I also don't want to seem as though I'm bashing this movie just for the sake of being different. I'm just expressing my genuine opinion. I'm not looking to convert anyone to my way of thinking.

Hey I'm fine with a 2 year wait as long as its good. More time to work on the sequel will give them the opportunity to make it just as good or better than the first. I would hate for them to rush and do a sequel and it turned out to be a disaster :( Like some sequels that shall remain nameless in this thread.

Avatar is better watched in 3D and watching it in 2D is definitely not the same. I'm glad I watched it in 3D (but I also watched it in 2D).

I doubt there'll be a sequel. It would be hard to think of another plot...

Gonna go see it again this weekend! It's just one of those movies you have to see more than once.

Well knowing this, it'll probably be at least two years. :( So much to wait for, huh. :sigh: I hate longggg waiting but it'll def be worth it when time comes.

LOL I love the debate we have going on here. It's great to see the different points of view.

I look at today's world and I still see the same stuff that happened in the past. The only difference is that now it's easier to cover up because people have gotten better at it.

No matter what, whether in the past or the present greed and power are always gonna be major factors. Not everyone is gonna be "pure of heart".

I've been waiting for this film for months, and I've been so stupidly excited about this coming out...I saw it on opening day, and it lived up to all my expectations. It's absolutely brilliant, and it's safe to say that it's as emotionally engaging as it is visually stunning - there's a lovely, decent storyline to back up all the impressive effects. Gah, I loved it. Now I just want to see it again as much as possible!
