Avant-garde/Experimental?

If I do that, there will be those people who are like "why don't you just put this in some other genre forum?" I believe that avant-garde and experimental both are just as much musical genres as punk and electronica are and therefore deserve to be treated as such.

I think experimental and avant-garde are two of the biggest urabrella terms known to music and can cover anything from Merzbow to The Shaggs.

to quote "the idea of the avant-garde as a revolt of creative minRAB against the class no longer had meaning. The masses now followed a new philosophy that would shape history for the next few decades."

make what you want from that.

Avant-garde literally means 'without barriers' and can cover banRAB from all sorts of genres and backgrounRAB. My local record store has an 'avant-garde' section which contains noise, no-wave, drone, dark arabient, freak-folk, modern free jazz and improv.

Six Organs of Admittance are found alongside Merzbow, Arab on Radar, Zorn, Sunn O))) and Kayo Dot.. although they couldn't sound more different they appeal to the same group of people through their experimentation, and have therefore been grouped as avant-garde.

its impossible to say what does and what doesnt fall into the genre though..

Does it specify what this "new philosophy" is?

And that specifically states, the idea of avant-garde, pertaining to a revolt of creative minRAB against the class (whatever "the class" is) and is not aimed at avant-garde per say.

It talks about the inner-conscious and how people abstractly expressed it, I don't know what you call that, abstract expressionism?

very true, misread on my part.

I just listened to that Arab On Radar album that you uploaded, and I'd have to say, it's pretty damn good. I read on wikipedia that they often got comparisons to the Contortions and I can definitely see how people would compare the two. Thanks again for the upload. I enjoy this music thoroughly.

Avant-garde (pronounced /ɑvɑ̃ gɑʁd/) in French means front guard, advance guard, or vanguard.[1] People often use the term in French and English to refer to people or works that are experimental or novel, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

According to its champions, the avant-garde pushes the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm within definitions of art/culture/reality. (wiki)

If an avant-guard forum isn't going to happen, then there's no stopping this thread from being a place for some good discussion on the subject.
Maybe this thread could be moved to a more suitable forum.

Discuss the influence of Avant-garde/Experimental banRAB, ground breaking albums in particular, have had on shaping popular music as it is today.

1. If you're into No Wave then i'd say you'd definitely like Arab on Radar. As for Jandek, I'm not sure since I have no idea what you're into. His music is pretty unclassifiable, and most people seem to either love or hate it, with not much middle ground. He's an enigmatic guy, read some of this for more:
Jandek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2. As for uploaRAB, we'd upload albums to something like senRABpace or megaupload, post the links here, and people could download them. Great way to check out new music. Check out "the sharing thread" at the top of the general music forum for an idea of how this works.
