Authors: When writing about a sensitive subject like rape?

I'm writing a story about domestic violence in a marriage. Is it best to limit it to a sentence or two? I don't want to be too graphic as it's a very sensitive subject.

why not be graphic? just because it's a sensitive subject it shouldn't get covered over - indeed it's one reason for it to be more descriptive and graphic.. surely?

This is a weird I'm going to use write with passion and belief and a lot of compassion. My first marriage, he was extremely violent he thought if he kept you scared you would stay. In my day there was nothing to help you. Thank goodness there are people that care these days.

I agree with Daisy. It is up to you and how you want your novel to be. For myself, I really hate reading anything like that, and seeing anything like that in movies or on tv. It is just one of those things that gets to me andis upsetting. However, not everyone is like me. You just need tot think about how you want your novel to be. For example, if your novel is mainly focused on the abuse, I don't see why you wouldn't go into more detail...but if you are trying to get the readers to see something beyond or aside from that, and going into great detail during those moments might take away from that. Your choice really.
