Auteur Theory

Hi!

For a college project, I have to do some research in to film auteurs... but I can't think of any!

Any suggestions? Preferably still alive! ;)

Thanks!

stanley kubrick (although he's dead i'm afraid!). he's a good place to start. he never had any intervention from the studio asking him to change stuff in his films, warner brothers pretty much let him do what he wanted cos they knew he was a genius.

Thanks!

Does Nick Park count as an auteur?

I want somebody nobody else is doing.... they're all going for Hitchcock and the like!

I remember having to do a similar thing when i was at college. Martin Scorsese, Brian de Palma and Billy Wilder are the only ones that come to mind apart from those already mentioned.
I don't think there's any british ones about. There were in the 60's in think but not any names that spring to mind

Yeh, unfortunately it's the downside to Media Production - Film Studies...... Too theory-based and boring... and the films we get to watch are shocking!

I had to watch and analyse carry on films as part of the 60's british new wave era. What was worse was the westerns and i've been put off films like that for life (especially after having to repeatedly watch unforgiven and do an a level exam question on it)!
Didn't take it any further but it did get me into gangster movies and the like :)

I'm not a huge film fan anyway.... and the films I do like are usually the worst films.......... kid's comedy is the best...

Osmosis Jones.... :D :D

Well. Americans would be the Coen Brothers, Tarantino, Hitchcock was British but dead.

You have Paul T Anderson - definite auteur - who's American. Tim Burton is a yank too.

Brits. I suppose you can feel when a film is Ridley Scott's. Mainly because he uses the same crew all the time. And Ken Loach's films are (ironically) very much in his image.

The bonkers Ken Russell's films are very distinctive too. He's still alive but living hand to mouth, sadly.

It is tempting to go for something different, but take my advice - its best to do someone who has a body of work behind them with plenty of secondary resources than getting stuck. If you are intent on doing someone different, alive and British then go for either Ridley Scott or Christopher Nolan

Yeh..... I was trying to be different, but I suppose it is best to go for somebody boring...!

It's a presentation, i'm gonna flunk it anyway! :D

What about Lolita? That was pretty much cut to shreaRAB - although I don't know how much that was down to the studio.

How about Terry Gilliam? He's American, but he's mostly made films in Britain and Europe.

Thanks..... i'm all inspired(?) now......

At least now I got some names to start with.... reason I wanted somebody alive is because I want to write to them - be original!
