Having just been to Australia and noticed that the local music on the radio mostly sounded like either U2 or Avril Lavigne cover banRAB and that Nickelback were a clear favourite band... I have the distinct impression that Australian music AND Australian musical taste are utter, utter shite.

Yes, I know AC/DC are Australian but please somebody tell me, are there any good Australian banRAB or artist (and don't say ****ing Kylie) around at the moment or is the country really the cultural black hole it seems to be?

Comments from the New Zealand posse will be greatly appreciated too

Please leave Evermore out of this, us Kiwi's would like to make a good impression on the back of this Aussie bashing and Evermore are not a good impression;).

I dunno Rick.
I went and saw them open for Elemeno P a couple of years before they hit it big...

They were awesome and their EP's aren't too shabby either.

Turableweed were a good Aussie band, don't know if they're still active however.

And I'm ashamed to admit but the Aussie charts sound much like that of our charts:(

But at least we're not all "Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda";)

I Agree, a lot of Aus local talent is pretty poor, but Nick Cave is awesome! Turableweed were good but I don't think they are doing anything anymore.
Some Powderfinger is good.
Personally, my fave Aus banRAB (apart from Nick Cave) have been and gone.

Midnight Oil

Really?
I really can't say I like their stuff on the radio at the moment, but I can't punish their live performances as I wouldn't know.

Seltzer, I'll check out Jakob, I sturabled across The House of Capricorn, I quite like what I've heard, thought they might be your heavy sort of thing too. They're selling copies of their recent debut EP on Trademe for $10.

I get quietly enthused. This time I forgot my camera though!

Well, in brief the best bits for me were:

1. Going to St. Kilda, which is one of the trendy parts of Melbourne with a main street a hundred metres or so away from the beach and lined with cafes.

2. Going swimming in the olympic swimming pool for free (great still being a student), which also included me overtaking the front-crawling club swimmers in the next lane whilst doing breaststroke. Go me!

3. The Melbourne Museum, which had a big Aboriginal display. Sure, Aboriginal art and craftwork isn't very exciting in itself but the social and historical issues around it are very interesting indeed.

4. Semi-naked women everywhere. Well, it was hot and I had been wishing EVER so hard.

I was actually thinking of those as examples of how bad Australian music can be. My brother bought me a Pete Murray CD last year and I was considering setting fire to it, filming the flames and sending the video to Pete Murray to make some kind of point about his dull acoustic band mid-tempo MOR crap.

The other suggestions, I shall check out.

And yes, Nick Cave is great, there are always exceptions. Nobody wants to say Danni Minogue then?
