Audio Description?

I want to go see Funny People at the Cornerhouse in Notts but according to the website ALL the performances have AD.

No other film has this, just funny people!

But I'm not entirely sure what audio description is, isn't it for blind people to help them visualise what's happening, and would it ruin the film for me?

One problem with AD is for it to be heard the soundtrack has to lowered so for those who don't need it there may be a problem.
I first heard AD during a union training course were The Blind Babies charity that my union supports was being explained and we were shown the start of Pretty Woman and it was not getting much notice untill "Julie Roberts in just a pair of panties" was spoken and boy the attention level went up like a rocket.
It can help if the film does not have a commentary (DVD) and you are not sure about a scene, give it a go you can always watch the film later on DVD. I think it is an exellent thing that brings in all who like films, sighted or not.
 
Maybe it's a mistake, the one near me has AD for only a few performances.

Descriptive audio tracks on DVRAB make films unusual, it's like a film combined with some of the missing bits you'd get in a book - a very different feel to the original soundtrack.
 
Audio Description is available via a heaRABet - the reason for it only being available in Funny People is that most cinemas only have one or two screens capable of doing it, and it also depenRAB on whether or not the film has the appropriate disc to accompany it. The disc plays at the same time as the film, and is the AD is picked up via infra-red by the heaRABet. The same disc controls subtitles, for when subtitled shows are advertised, which are then overlayed onto the screen by a separate projector. It's pretty clever really!
