ATT's Data Plan, Need Advice

I am new to the forum, so sorry if this topic has been addressed. I need to upgrade my phone and ATT just doesn't have any good phones that aren't smart phones. I just refuse to add another $30 a month for a service I won't use just to have a good phone. Basically, I want a touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, and a good calendaring system.

If I purchase an unlocked, unbranded phone, it is my understanding that ATT won't be able to track that I have a smart phone and I will not be able to charge me. Is this correct?

There may be times it would be good to use my phone for the internet when the laptop at home is tied up. First, is it possible to connect a phone to HughesNet? Secondly, if I do connect, will I be charged data usage by ATT or will this be considered data usage under HughesNet?

Thanks in advance for any help/ advise!

You can use certian phones with your sim card that do not report to the towers (like the iphone does). On at&t I'm not sure which models those are perhaps someone else can tell you.

As for Hughesnet as long as you have a wireless router and the phone is wireless internet capable you should be good to go! Using wireless internet does not hook your phone to at&t's data transmissions.

So, what you are saying is that it is not possible to purchase an unlocked iPhone and then bring it onto the AT&T network without a data plan, correct?

So you have ATT service, using an unlocked iphone and they didnt make you get the $30/month data plan? Right now I have ATT on a family plan with $30/month for unlimited text. I ordered an iphone 3g on ebay (unlocked and jailbroken) and plan on putting my sims from my old phone to the iphone. Will they charge me another $30/month for using the iphone? What exactly does the data plan of att include? (internet, text, ?) Thanks

I have an iphone that is not hooked up to an at&t internet package (however I still have an at&t number). They have on 3 separate instances despite me telling them not to, resumed internet services on my phone and charged me for it. They can be very devious like that and send you a good 100+ dollar bill for something you didn't want.
