I had new plugs, wires, rotor cap, and water pump installed on my 94 buick road master estate wagon. When the mechanic put everything together and tried starting the car, it made a funny noise and smoke came out. It wont start. He thinks the starter is bad now. I have never ever had a problem starting the car. It always turned over on the first try. Does anyone with knowledge of this engine have any idea what could have happened?? Did he get the fire order wrong on the wires? What would make a funny noise and cause smoke. He didn't say if the smoke was black or white.

Apparently this " mechanic " wasn't smart enough to do this one wire at a time ? It does sound like firing order is way off or he screwed the timing up some how . Bet if you quiz him , he will not know this is a Chevy engine and not a Buick .

was this guy a for real mechanic? A starter will not cause the engine to smoke. If the smoke was black, the fuel/air mixture is off; if it's blue, you're leaking oil past the rings or valve guides. Did he refill the coolant? If he forgot, it'll make a funny noise and then seize. THEN you'll get white smoke.
