When I renewed my ATT family plan and upgraded to Iphones last year, I specifically asked the sales rep about termination fees if we moved abroad. We had been contemplating a move to Canada but there was nothing set in stone then. The sales rep told me that the termination fee would be waived once we provided proof of residence in Canada. So I went ahead and upgraded, feeling secure that IF we moved to Canada, we wouldn't be charged a penalty.
Now that we know we're moving, I called ATT last night to ask about plans that cover both the United States and Canada and was told that we had to live in the States 60% of the time to qualify. So I asked about the termination fee.....and was told it would be $130 dollars PER PHONE!!
I was completely stunned! I had been given assurances that this wouldn't be the case. So I called ATT's National Relocation Department, and apparently, they don't have ANY record of my earlier conversation and no, the termination fee will not be waived. Apparently, its $140 dollars per phone.
Can they do that?? Is it legal?? Can they bind someone to a contract, telling them there's no termination fee, and then sock it to you??
I'm so mad!!
