This is the first movie of this kind of genre that I really enjoyed. So beautiful.

And James.. just.. blew me away. :clap:
 
i just watched this the other day..and i am so annoyed at Briony..her lie..and the consequences..
it was so sad to find out that that was simply how they were written at the end..but in reality they never got a real chance to be together..it was so depressing..
 
They aren't airing the actual show of the golden globes but they are having some sort of news conference and announcing the winners. I am rooting for a couple of movies that are nominated. I am rooting for of course atonement,juno,no country for old men.
 
No, she doesn't tell anyone except Robbie. I really don't think it was really love though. More like a child's fancy.
 
I really liked this movie, but it made me so angry.

I really don't think Atonement should be called a romance. I mean it is romantic but it is not a romance.

To me it was a story of narcissism. Briony was the most self absorbed, delusional person I ever met.

At the end of the movie when she says "I gave them their happy ending" I wanted to throw up. I yelled "YOU TOOK IT AWAY! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO GIVE IT BACK!"

She was so jealous that she destroyed her sister's life because she couldn't have him.

Ugh.

But Keira and James were amazing in it.
 
I don't think that Briony certainly knew the consequences of her actions were going to be so brutal and far reaching. Yet her lie was incredibly cruel and too mean spirited for a 13 year old kid, but Briony was certainly brilliant and she knew that her actions would have some consequences. That nags on me. Hehe.

I don't blame you. It was very powerful and moving. :nod: I just sat there, picturing their world falling apart, so unfair, so....fragile, as if the universe conspired against their love.

What do you mean by your spoiler? I'm so curious, I love both actors and want to see the movie so much.
 
I don't know, I thought all three actresses did such a great job (I can't even decide which was the best!) that I really felt for her character. She made a mistake, a great big mistake that she could never fix. It was realistic. She thought she knew more than she did, and with the imagination of a child prodigy writer, I can see how easily she could make such a lifechanging error. Am I glad she did it? No. Can I see why her sister and Robbie were both unable to forgive her? Yes. But I still liked the character because of the great way she was portrayed as someone who gets trapped for the rest of her life by the guilt she feels over something she can't ever fix. Robbie and Cecilia were the ones who suffered, no doubt, but not looking at Briony's character as a person suffering too is missing out on part of the story. She wasn't the classic villain. She felt badly, she hated herself, its not as if she simply moved on with life after this. She doesn't seem to feel worthy of anything at all anymore.
 
I really hope James gets nominated as well, his performance was just so moving. Especially when [sp] he sees all the bodies of those kids in the field and he starts crying [/sp]

The Academy seem to love war epics so this is bound to get at least some nominations. :love:
 
I agree with everything you said. What I found interesting about grown up Briony is the way she explains that she took their happiness away and is giving it back through what she wrote. That's so....upsetting, but it was her way of "atoning" so I guess it's valid in that sense.
