i usually use superman or spiderman since comparison to a "comic book" tends to get the message across pretty quick- and you can make all the same comparisons about events and people existing in spiderman as you can in real-life.
i'm sure they did something with him rescuing people in 9-11, does that mean that spiderman really went into the world trade center and carried people out? no- but the storyline tends to fit nicely in comparing one work of fiction, to another.
