you little story proves nothing. Even Christians have such tales. You are only better than that one man, not all Christians.
 
if there was a way to save themselves and their family members, of course they should have signed it. if you'd rather die than tell a lie to some scumbag who doesn't respect you anyway (hello, you're imprisoned and starved), then you don't really value your own life, and that's sad.
