Atheist vs creationist evolution debate - are some atheists stupid?

I saw a Nightline debate on this and thought the atheists were stupid - not because of their view, but because they allowed it to be a god debate instead of an evolution debate.

Should they not have made the debate between an evolution believing Christian and a creationist?

What do you think?
Perhaps I should have clarified. Obviously the people with science on their side won, but the creationists didn't lose their own believers as they simply said it is god vs no god.

The aim should have been to get two sets of believers together, one side that uses science versus the creationists, that would force the creationists to address the issues rather than hide behind the "they are godless heathens" argument.

Having two sets of believers ridiculing each others views has to be the way forward.
 
That happens very frequently actually.

Kenneth Miller, expert witness at the Dover trial, is Catholic. He has debated a few times.

Even in that situation, it becomes an argument over God. When you have no evidence, you must resort to other tactics. You simply cannot debate a creationists in the first place.
 
Are some atheists stupid? Certainly. Are some people who believe in a god stupid? Certainly, only a lot more.
 
its impossible to have an argument about evolution without discussing a "God" in my opinion
and many evolutionists are scientists with phds and respected in their field
so no evolutionists (not atheists. theres a difference) are not stupid
