At what point in his life did the author Richard Rodriguez come out of the closet?

I'm writing a paper on the author and I would like to know at what point did the author come out of the closet as a gay man? Was it after he finished with his schooling or before? Does he talk about any confusion he had about his sexual identity earlier on in his life in his second book, Days of Obligation?
