Can I get some advice on what I might be doing wrong

Ive been going to the gym for years on and off. Half assed to be honest compared to what I started doing today. I started a program found on this website. I usually workout about 60% as hard as I did today by following the routine. I got my nutrition in check and have been making sure I have lots of protien carbs and fats (its a muscle building program)
I couldnt finish the last workout. I felt like I was going to puke or pass out. I looked in the mirror afterwards and I was pale. By the time I got home I was fine. The last meal I ate before the gym was at 3:00. I got home from work about 5:30ish, made a shake with protien carbs and a pre workout supplement. I had tons of energy but it faded when I started to feel light headed near the end of the workout. I also had major problems near the end with muscle cramping. So I was unable to finish.
Maybe I didnt eat enough food or I just worked out too hard and my body wasnt used to it. Any suggestions??
