AT&T Data Plan Question

Hello, I want to upgrade my phone to the AT&T blackberry curve. However, I can only get a good price if I get a data plan with it. Will I be able to cancel my data plan like a month after I get my phone?
 
It depend upon when you activate your account and through whom. If you activate your account after September 6, a BlackBerry data plan will be required or you have to request a block of all data. Then you can only send and receive text messages. If you get a rebate debit card through AT&T, you have to keep your data plan until the rebate is processed. If you get your phone from one of the online resellers, you may be required to keep your data plan for at least 181 days to avoid being charged extra fees. Without the BlackBerry data plan, none of the unique BlackBerry functions will work.
 
The AT&T Data Plan will be required. There will be NO OPTION to block the data features and still keep the phone.

Considering AT&T uses GSM...it's going to be fun to watch AT&T try and implement this requirement with the ability to use multiple devices by changing your SIM.
 
While this is true, every time you use a phone (voice/text/data) the IMEI is registered in the network, so AT&T will (or can potentially) know which phone you're using, unless, of course, it's an unbranded device. Still, they'd have to sweep or audit accounts everyday to know who's using which phone and, frankly, I don't think they have the personnel to do that.
 
Spoke with AT&T. They said their systems will be setup to automatically do the change whenever the SIM is inserted into a data enhanced device (PDA, etc) that AT&T's network recognizes. So if you put your basic phone SIM into a Blackberry, it won't even let you use the device for anything until the AT&T system verifies it and automatically adds the data plan to it (she said this procedure usually only takes 20 minutes after the SIM is inserted). The next day (maybe two) you will receive both a text message and a phone call notifying you of the change.
 
I don't get why some people want smartphones without data plans. AT&T offers plenty of full keyboard phones for the texters.

Because
-The Blackjack 2 has a real full functional GPS unit in it, I use Garmin XT, and various GPS tools the most.
-I like the idea of being able to install apps on my phone, J2ME applications are just boring. Guitar tuner, pocket translator, bluetooth remote.
-I use my laptop's internet connection to use the internet on my phone when I'm watching a movie.
-I needed a PDA anyway
-I wanted a portable eBook reader
-I needed a PDA type up some papers and spreadsheets
-My old Walkman phone broke
-I like having a movie or two on me, in my device.
Yeah..... Phone and texting is my main source of communication and my emails can wait.
 
I dont use ATT Navigator. Garmin Mobile XT desont require a data plan. It works perfectly and I DONT have a data plan.
No offense, but that is the response I'd expect from an AT$T employee, I'm not going to pay for overpriced PDA data crap if I can help it.
