AT&T cell phone contract question?

My AT&T wireless contract ended last September while I was living in another country. I made my normal monthly payments up until the expiration of the contract, and left it at that. I have come back to the states to see that I've received four months worth of charges on the account. I've not used the phone since I left the country the previous June. I'm hoping someone can help me out on what to say or to do to avoid these charges that are essentially for nothing.
