AT&T Cancels X7?

Precisely. I was kind of hoping I'd get a jewel in the rough at a dirt-cheap price level. But knowing the Death Star, even that is unlikely. I remember paying $100ish (after rebate!) for my 6650.

I'm back to thinking holding on to my MediaNet plan and getting an N8 would be optimal. The cash outlay is large, so I'll continue speculating and vacillating :)
 
So back to the X7.

I'm not to sure that I believe that the X7 is canceled with AT&T. Following the blogs sources for this rumor, it leads back to a Wall Street Journal Story, where they state the source is "people familiar with the situation". For me to believe something, I need something better than that, because everyone on this board is "familiar with the situation". It's just too weak, why not, somebody that works for Nokia or AT&T, or the lady that works in the cafeteria?
Any how, Nokia or AT&T are not saying anything, because the X7 has not been announced (they were waiting for the MWC, most likely), and we've only seen X7 handsets with AT&T Branding, so why bother saying anything, now.
 
There have been plenty of phone that go through testing at at&t and never appear. The N95 was one :P

If the rumors are true and at&t wasn't planning to market the phone muchor provide enough of a subsidy, I'm really not surprised Nokia would pull out. The phone probably wouldn't have done much for customer perception in the US, especially if it's priced in the same levels as the iPhone 4 or android phones regardless of the better specs.
 
^ I don't see a big deal about a physical menu button. The e7 has one too and most likely the c6.


I've owned phones with and without it. Personally I'd rather have it since overall it's more responsive with it than without it.


BTW I was once a N8 owner and had no problems at all with the n8's menu button either...
 
Unfortunately seems now true that it was cancelled.. heard another confirmation of this. Unless they renegotiate of course. Staggering that the critical issue of price was left to the last minute negotiation..
 
^ the button the the N8 is made for right handers essentially. if you use it with your left hand like i do, it's a pain to push. feels like i'm going to drop it lol
 
A conspiracy theorist would say that Apple has a hand in it.

A dilbert theorist would say that att has both hands on this.

A former user theorist would say that Nokia has put their foot in the mouth, again.

It's unbelievable how stubborn some companies are. They need to create a product that will make att beg Nokia to carry it. Not the other way around.

For that they will have to learn marketing. And give up on their handicapping OSes.
 
Anyone else notice, in the picture of the X7 at the above link, I don't know what it's called (the middle of the three buttons on the screen) it shows 4 dots, instead of the 3 for normal Symbian^3 handset? Does the X7 have 4 home screens?

really? You were predicting the x7 was a done deal on ATT. I believed it would never be released.

Would you also like to predict which carrier is going to "bet" on a brand new unproven OS running an unproven Atom processor?
 
Ha - I've been a sucker for AT&T's Symbian Nokias - I borrowed the 3500/3520, I've had the 6620 (still works, is my backup), The N75 (died) and now the 6650.

Missed the 7782 and the E71-x and didn't realize they ever had (or did they cancel?) the N80!
 
IIRC, never said "this is a done deal". I did say I found the rumor very unlikely etc. But hey, my memory is frail, I am on old man. :)

Unfortunately the rumor was true. Staggering that it would get canceled so close to the announcement.

AFAIK, if you are referring to the N9, according to most rumors its almost certain not to have an Atom processor. But who knows. As for AT&T and Meego - I don't think it very likely that N9 would end up on it. The one after that perhaps.

In any event, I still would not bet a lot of money on Nokia taking on WP7. But, I may well be wrong so do make your own decisions on where to bet your money. :)
 
we are going to know in about 3 or 4 weeks what the plans are of the new CEO. It looks like he is making some tough decisions right now. one of them I think is to have fewer better phones. See the "peanut butter manifesto". whether meego makes the cut is a real mystery. not many leaks. I can tell you the picture of the N9 form factor that i have seen floating around looks like a device from 5 years ago, that is, a large clunky, hand held computers. A niche device in every sense of the word.
 
Whatever the technical merits of Meego are, it's definitely going to be a niche device, like the N900.

It'll be too expensive, in the unlocked iPhone range, for their emerging market customers, while the brand is unknown in the U.S. and Western Europe is falling in love with Android and iPhones. Their best shot for success for an N9 is Europe and maybe Australia, if it's subsidized via a carrier contract, but few of their Indian and China-based customers will be springing for an $800 unlocked phone.

The subsidized phone system in the U.S. seems ideal for an N9 running Meego, but again, Nokia has a very serious brand image problem there, the OS aside.
 
I disagree with you about n9 being right for subsidized us customers. that's how they would need to sell it but it would never fly. for one the form factor is not mainstream. two, you mentioned, it's a brand new OS with zero brand recognition. why bother taking a risk with android and iphone out there? the phone is too expensive for emerging markets. the phone may have a market in europe with the real geeky phone nuts (linux heads). but that's a small market.

the more I think about it, the more I am sure that Nokia has something up it's sleeve. and it's not going to be meego.
