AT&T and Nokia developer competition, $10M total in prizes

Am I missing something? I would think you can still buy the N8 unlocked (and unspoiled) even if AT&T did start carrying it (which it may or may not).

What you could be missing is that if AT&T adopts the N8, they will start charging "smart phone" data rates, as opposed to the $10 or $15 unlimited data plans that current Nokia phones enjoy...

Normally that's the case, but two different cases bring up areas of concern. Look at the N1. But the phone that raised eyebrows recently was the x10a. People were under the radar with the x10a, until ATT got the x10 and everyone that had the x10a got hit...

That post is complete speculation based on things we don't even have solid answers to, so I don't agree either. I think the device being tested is better anyway

Btw, was the E71x ever considered a smartphone by AT&T and if it was did it affect the people with unlocked E71s at all with regards to dataplans?

If AT&T recognizes your phone you get *ahem* "upgraded" to the $15 200MB or $25 2GB hard capped plans.

They were double dipping with the N1, because they didn't take any of the subsidized costs with the N1 and stood behind their smartphone policy to get it both ways.

The whole X10/X10A thing is what raised some red flags recently because the X10A and AT&Ts X10 should not have been recognized. (Like Nokia's e71/e71x) Nobody knows how AT&T got the IMEIs of the x10a but one can only speculate that Sony just handed them over as part of a deal to get AT&Ts carrier brand backing.

For months the x10a users were able to use their unlimited (5GB soft capped plans) and fly completely under the radar. The day that AT&T released the x10 everyone got text messages from AT&T that they were now on the more expensive smartphone plan and they lost their softcap as well.

I'll definitely be curious to see how this is going to play out with the N8 and other future Nokia devices...

After the x10a incident, Sony completely fell off my radar. You could have said the x97 and I probably would have brushed it off too.

My mind has been on a couple other phones lately... (more on that later) :)
