AT&T and a great android handset release???

Isn't AT&T locking down their android devices to only allow app purchased on a specific android marketplace and didn't they replace google for yahoo?

Personally, I opted for the Nexus, while I paid the unlocked price, I have more freedom and it didn't extend my contract.
 
I don't know yet about the Google /yahoo switch, but will post back tomorrow or so after I have played with my sister's Aria... I think you are limited to Android Market only apps, but the main issue seems to be the bloatware they have added that you apparently can't uninstall. I am pretty excited for the Captivate though, and can't wait to play with it, if it is still decent it might be my next phone. (I don't mind the blackberry-ish style, it is better than the wannabe iPhone look). After I toy with that Aria, I will report back what I notice is different...
 
Buy a SIM free device is always the best choice this is the reason I never buy a device from a carrier I buy my devices SIM free like my Nexus One now(Using AT&T Network)but not everyone like to spend more money and for them the best choice is go to a carrier to buy a device that is look to this carrier but the price is much lower or free but because that great price you need to have some restrictions,some extra software from the carrier,carrier UI some times,and a lock device to this carrier.
 
The HTC Aria don't have to much software from AT&T,Just the sence from HTC and yes is block to download applications just from the market.

But as a Good News the guys from engadget have one AT&T Captivate and till this moment do not have any restrictions about downloading from any source but have TouchWiz 3.0 and not too much AT&T software.
 
that's good, it is really laggy in the engadget video though. She does say it is an early build though, so there is hope...
I am on a nexus currently, but had to switch from T mo due to crappy coverage, so no 3G on my nexus, and I think I am liking the Captivate...
 
The AT&T Captivate is really a good choice also in my area T-Mo don't have 3G signal thats the main reason I'm using AT&T because the Internet is snappy fast using My Nexus or any of the other devices I have and no problem with the calls.
 
Just to reply. I work for an AT&T Authorized Retailer and I got myself this phone (HTC Aria). I'm loving every minute of it. Currently you can only get apps through the market, however I've been told that when 2.2 hits (about 3 months supposedly) you'll be able to install from a computer or microSD card. Quick personal review on the phone:
I personally like the discreet size as I'm not into holding a brick against my face.The screen does not work as well outside as I'd personally like but it is still viewable for doing normal things on the phone (watching video is out though when outdoors).The Wi-Fi speed is great as is the 3G speed (such as streaming Pandora).As for inbuilt AT&T software...mostly stuff like AT&T family map, AT&T Nav, AT&T Radio...doesn't take up much room (less than 10mb I believe) and they don't seem to effect speed, so not a big deal to me.Speed: Well, this being my first smartphone I haven't really tried to overload the thing by running 5-10 apps at once, however the thing doesn't miss a beat when running 3-4apps in background.Touch Screen: highly responsive and easy to use (pinch to zoom)Overall thoughts: Great device at a great price (my store has an extra $50 rebate so only $80 after rebates).
 
I think what you try to tell or you read is with froyo(2.2) You have the option app2sd what this means when you install an app the app go to the memory card instead of the main memory and don't mean you can install and application from a developer site like when I do Beta testing I just download an app from the developer site this app is not in the market because don't exist in the market till the developer finish the app and submit to the market,this is what i try to explain,I'm using a Nexus one with AT&T service but if I have the AT&T Aria I can't do this Beta testing because I can't download from unknow sources.
 
on other carriers' phones there is an option under "applications" in settings the check or uncheck "unknown sources" is such an option present on the Aria? if so, this is what allows users to install applications from anywhere, not just the Android market, and what we as consumers are hopeful for...

ps keep us posted with whatever info you can about the Captivate, I am very interested in how crippled/enabled it is. I really like the design change, I just hope not much else has been altered.
