At social events, do people mingle?

If I ever to go to a singles social event by myself and if I had noone to go with and if there are all these chicks and guys sitting together and if they all know each other, would it be ok if I mingled with them? How can I approach them? What should I talk about if I am being ignored?
 
Definitely if you have the option to take a friend with you, then do so. If not then hang out by the bar, its the best place to catch other strays. For small talk, talk about the atmosphere ( not the clouds and stuff but whats going on around at the party) mostly ask questions, girls really like to talk about themselves and mistake that for in-depth conversation. I don't like to approach large mixed gender groups because it has the makings of an awkward situation written all over it. If you know the person throwing the party ask others if and how they know them that's another easy way to strike up conversation
 
lol... not really.. you may upset someone (the boyfriend) ahaha... be yourself.. you dont have to try hard...

or if you see a chick.. ALONE and youre sure she's ALONE.. then why not talk to her but dont push too much.. just dont drive people away...
