At a wedding, why are the bride and groom expected to kiss in front of everyone there?

I always thought it strange. Kissing - well, in the context of a couple - seems to be a more private activity between the two of them. So why expect them to do it in front everyone there?

Overly affectionate people are strange to me, and so are PDAs. I've always felt the whole 'kiss the bride' thing was along the line of wanting to watch them have sex on their wedding night. I know it's a stretch, but that's how it seems to ME.

I know for a fact that this isn't a custom in every culture for weddings. But for the ones that include it, why?

When/Where did it start?
I'm NOT talking about myself ,and I'm NOT getting married. There's this thing on TV that made me think of asking this.
